I am 6"4" but I guess the average height of the California Repercussion Sousaphone section is about 5' 9" (we have men and women.)
In the Los Trancos Woods Community Marching Band the tuba/Sousaphone section has been very varied - low 5s to 6' 5" and I have met two jazz tubists who are more than 5 inches taller than me.

I wanted to watch some of the results before I jumped in. I am quite (pleasantly) surprised at the number of other tuba players who measure out at 5'7" on this board. I always figured I was one of the only ones below 6'.

Dare I bring it up - but it seems that the old stereotype of tuba players being big heavyset guys has some merit - BUT -

is it a case of big heavyset (notice the use of the PC (or should it properly be called these days horizontally challenged) word for fat :) ) musically inclined kids are attracted to the tuba because it is the musical instrument reflection of themselves or is it the band director needs a tuba player and looks around for the biggest kid he can find in band who he thinks can hold up a sousaphone without collasping?

I remember I wanted to play the tuba back in 4th grade but the BD insisted I had the lips for the cornet and I had to push for four years to switch to tuba.

Was 5'11" now 5'10" as the years go by gravity is still pulling me down making me even shorter - hate gravity.

6'5" and hovering aroung 300 lbs. I started playing in 7th grade(up from trumpet). I agree partly with the person who talked about starting up in school. I think I was the biggest dog in the pound so they thought I could handle it! :tuba:
