Bad Roomate
I'm a freshman at LSU this year, and being from Atlanta, I didnt know anyone, so i decided to room with a trumpet player. He was pretty cool at first, but now all he does is eat my food, bring friends over and play beer pong and act with complete disregard to my stuff... He also doesnt go to sleep until around 4 in the morning and keeps me up until then, so now i have a D in my intro to music class, which is really hard here. He gets wasted every night of the week and its REALLY pissing me off. What should i do about it?

First of all, i think banning Dihydrogen Monoxide is a very bad idea.... wed all die! But i did hide his trumpet for a couple days... He didnt notice for a 48 hours when he had band.... So he didnt really care he just skipped...

Re: Bad Roomate
This is precisely why I had a "single" for 2 years before getting my own apartment. Although I LOVE the "Seal a Meal" idea, you will likely have to take matters into your own hands.
#1 Try going to your housing office and request a transfer. Lord only knows how that will turn out.
#2 Purchase large trunks for your stuff and put pad locks on them. Put anything you value or don't want F***ed with in the trunks. That was what I had my first 3 weeks of college (I had 4 "party first" roommates.)
#3 Should #1 not be possible or a good choice @ your university, find someone on your floor (or in your building) that ALSO wants to switch roommates and see if you can work out an agreement. You just may have dueling personalities.Your treble-clef roommate might get along better with another sloth.
#4 "Full Metal Jacket" = "Seal a Meal" + Soap Socks
#5 (The computer geek inside me) Create a "hosts" file on his computer and make every pr0n site go to 127.0.0.1. Then again he might end up in a worse mood.
#6 Fingers in warm water?
#7 Substitute a cake of bass rosin for his favorite "all natural" soap. Honey in his shampoo bottle?
#8 ???
#9 Profit?

Whatever you do, keep the horn away and out of sight.
Being in a similar situation to you , just several months ago, I came home to a crushed tuba bell with a muddy trombonists shoe prints all over it. I never saw it coming. He was a great player and I really took for granted that he would use the same care around my equipment as he does his own, I was wrong.
When you get drunk with thousands of dollars worth of music equipment in the house, it is only a matter of time before something gets broken by a careless person much too caught up in themselves to notice. Not only was he immature in his actions, but I made the bigger mistake in assuming much more than I ever should.
Get out. Do not let things get too far out of hand. Sometimes some people are just NOT meant to live together and this sounds like a prime example.

Yep. Don't count on him to magically change, especially since trumpet players don't always respond well to logic and reason {djwesp wrote:Some people never grow up.

If you live in a dorm, talk to the RA to get reassigned right away. If not, talk to your landlord. If there is a possibility that you can get out of living with him, take that chance--don't wait until it is too late to search for another option. If you can get a better roommate now, why wait?

Talk to your RA, this is stupid. You shouldn't have to put up with this. You're paying way too much money for this crap. If you RA ignores you, work your way up the chain and get both of their butts in trouble.

Re: Bad Roomate
At the risk of yet another Tubenet freak jury member sounding like a broken record:
-Request a transfer out of the room. Make your RA aware of the situation, but realize that you'll likely need to speak with someone over his head. Pay a visit to the housing/residence life coordinator and discuss the situation with them. Go to the Dean's office or the University President. Be nice but firm in insisting that you be moved...discuss how you will be reassigned and who your new roommate with be. Perhaps they have a single room you could move into?
-Don't blame your academic trouble on your roommate situation. Success is up to you. You have to find a way to be successful under the circumstances. Until the roommate situation is rectified, I suggest spending lots of time working/studying in a place like the university library's quiet study area (no, not the coffee shop) where you will not be disturbed.
-Quit screwing around with the alcohol. Seriously. You said you were a freshman in your initial post. That puts you at 18-19 years old. Legally (since drinking age is 21), you shouldn't be buying, selling (especially to your RA...duh!), or consuming alcohol. This just might have something to do with the situation you find yourself in as well...
So, to recap:
-Work to get the roommate situation fixed
-Quit drinking/buying/selling alcohol
- Make lifestyle adjustments as needed to make yourself successful (ie study in a library)

Re: Bad Roomate
I will echo Tom's replies of the alchohol thing. If you are a music ed major (and want to teach when you graduate) and get in trouble with under age drinking you can forget about getting a state teaching certificate. It ain't going to happen. (at least that is the way it is here in PA) You are over 18 so you are not a juvenile anymore, things will go on your permanent record, period.
And I liked Tom's suggestion of speaking with the head of housing or the Dean. You (or your parents) are paying way too much money for this kind of college experience.
Colllges usually have spare rooms for this very situation. it happens every year. your case is not unique. they will be very helpful. they will also be very interested in the fact that he drinks so much.
Do not be reactive. you must be proactive.
Get Out ASAP

Have you ever considered just shutting the door, turning up the music, and beating him up (Futurama reference!)?

(I didn't suggest this) When he's passed out, set him on fire (or when he wakes up tell him he's a viola major)

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

If you set a viola on fire, you will be warm for a minute. If you teach a viola to build fires, you've taken care of the 2nd violins, too, and made a number of audiences very happy for an entire concert!THE TUBA wrote:If you build a man a fire, he will be warm for the rest of the day.
