If you do not like your teacher, I would find another.
If you do not like that teacher, I would go to another.
If you do not like THAT teacher, I would quit taking lessons since it is YOU who is the problem.

the answer that's come about, as far as I can tell, is what I knew would: there is no real answer. EXCEPT: that's what your teacher wants. You're lucky in some ways, there are some teachers who require students to have their OWN CC tuba before starting lessons. Those teachers want nothing to do with BBb, which is a royal shame in my not-so-humble opinion.
I now feel fairly comfortable on every key. It's been 2 years since I've owned an Eb, and 20 years since I owned a CC, but I've played both somewhat recently for a little while and, with music in front of me, had no problems with either. Trying to do things off the top of my head was not so easy.
You'll be better off, in the long run, learning CC, but try not to forget the BBb things. They are both tubas, after all, and you can easily transfer things from one to the other.

I learned Tuba after decades of playing Euphonium in both Treble and Bass Clef so playing different fingerings on the same instrument wasn't a new concept to me. I started playing BBb mostly Sousaphone for our Fire Department Band and found that I really liked playing Tuba so I actually started taking some lessons. When it came time for me to upgrade my instrument my instructor suggested that I go with a CC Tuba, with the fingerings being the same as Treble clef Euphonium (ie: written C and G are open etc) it wasn't a hard transition for me. His reasoning was that here in the US there was just a perception / bias (not entirely true) by Orchestra directors that professionals played CC Tubas. His suggested that knowing and being proficient on both would be a skill that was worth developing since you are likely to run across a director who has a preference for CC and it will give you an edge. The main reason for me was I thought it would be a good challenge and a way to keep my mind sharp as I'm recently retired from my Day job, and keeping myself challenged mentally is important to me. It appears that by the insistence at many music schools that Tuba majors play CC tubas that there is some truth to the perception that if you are going to be a professional you need to know how to play CC. The only drawback I've found from making the switch to CC is that when I have to pick up a BBb Sousaphone again I do have to run some scales etc. to get back into the BBb mindset.

Forget DD --- AAb tubas are the wave of the future - think how many Sousa marches would be all open notes .

While I agree that a pro tubist should be at ease in any key, my choice for a SECOND set of fingerings would be Eb.
