I'm sure that all of the people suggested so far are excellent in their fields; they are great players, or have contributed significantly to the development of their students, or made some great tubas - or sometimes maybe all of the above.

However, I have a different view about whether they are "legends". For me there are many excellent exponents of the tuba but few "legends".

Bill Bell
Arnold Jacobs
Harvey Phillips
John Fletcher
Roger Bobo

Personally I don't think many of the others are legends - not yet anyway :-)

One of the first things I have my serious students do is to purchase your Tuba Helper CD. There are now lots of tuba solo CD's out there to choose from these days. Why TH? It is stuff they can play (or reasonably aspire to play), and it is perfomed on the big horn like they probably will. That CD is groundbreaking; you belong on the list.

Just have three for you:

Ralph Vaughan Williams - for his concerto
Paul Hindemith - for his Sonata
Vaclav Nelhybel - for his Suite and Ludus for Tuba Trio

All three helped in their own way to get the tuba a little more publicity.

George Alan Black (née Schwartz), He was a tubist in New York for many years, knew Bell well enough that he and Bell owned an Eb sousaphone in common. He taught at Western Washington State College, Bellingham, Washington, for many years. Harvey Phillips once described him as "the most technically perfect tubist I have ever heard."

George is shown in pictures of the New York rodeo, mounted, playing sousaphone, along with Bill Bell, also mounted and playing sousaphone.

There was a T. U. B. A. profile written of him in the mid 1970's; it should be in the ITEA archives.
Always make a good sound; audiences will forget if you miss a note but making a good sound will get you the next job.

I absolutely agree with both your sentiment and your list.

As flattered as I am, LJV, let's take my name off that list, too....not even a legend in my own mind......

Even though this one may be a bit off beat, following on the heels of Fred Marrich's name being submitted, I suggest Vince Simonetti, for similar reasons. Mr. Marrich helped bring the first true tuba "boutique" to life with his partnerships with the Hirbrunner family, the Meinl family, and the ultimate development of the Perantucci line. Mr. Simonetti developed the idea of having an outlet place for the sales of used tubas and euphoniums. Before this there were little ads that were listed in the TUBA Journal. His idea was truly revolutionary when it started--a "tuba exchange" that he then turned into quite the successful business. He helped develop several new instruments, and has one of the most varied private collection of historical low brass instruments going (Mike Lynch, of course, has one of the others).

You cannot make this list without including the British euphonium greats. So here's my list :

Trevor Groom- Has to be the one man who has done the most for the euphonium. If you don't know who he is you should listen to these recordings of him : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1PPFQ6p82Y" target="_blank , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnSq6r5nd_s" target="_blank , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-JV4Lu0Vzw" target="_blank

David Childs, Bob Childs,David Thornton( Black Dyke Mills),Charley Brighton (UK soloist), Glyn Williams ( Fodens Richardson Brass Band)
