Brighter Sounding Alternative to a Schilke Helleberg II

Post by Z-Tuba Dude »

Howdy,

I currently have a Schilke Helleberg II that I very much like, but it seems to produce a tone that is a little on the dark side. Any suggestions for a similar mouthpiece, that will produce a lighter, brighter sound?

Thanks!

You might want to look into some of Scott Laskey's mouthpieces...

The 30F or 30G (or the 28 series if you want something a little smaller) might be just what you want.

Conn Helleberg 7B -- very similar but slightly sharper rim and slightly more conical cup. That ought to give you the bite you want.

I agree, the C-H 7B is a great mouthpiece. I've played on one since 7th grade (not the same exact one, but the same model). Nice bright sound, but not over the top.

I played on a Shilke Helleberh II for many years until I discovered Giddings and Webster mouthpieces. They Bayamo is now my main blow-hole for my Yorkbrunner and I am using the Bora on my F. The notes articulate better than ever. For a brighter sound, you may want to go with the a size sameller than the Bayamo, but the stainless steel is the greatest innovation since the piston valve.
