Don't wanna get into it much but this is a quote from the linked article which explains it fine for me:

"Roun McNeal, a former ASB president who is now in law school at Ole Miss, said his own decision to refrain from the chant was easily made.

"I said the chant one day and there was a black family sitting in front of me and they turned around and gave me this look like I hurt them," McNeal said."

If I was black and in the south, I wouldn't particularly like a chant which wanted to make things back like in the days when my ancestors (great-great grandparents most likely) were slaves.

How far back must you go in your own ancestry to find slaves? (In my own, about five generations. In my wife's, about the same.)

The South really needs to let go of its fixation with the past in order to truly move forward--I say that as a person who was born, raised, and currently live in the South.

Its 2009--and this sort of thing STILL goes on. Why is that? This is not about slavery--this is about what is happening now, 144 years after the end of slavery. People choose alot of things, but most people don't choose to be insulted or treated like trespassers in their own country.

Sure thing. The reason is that "The South shall rise again." (no matter what *your* personal meaning may be) has been inextricably connected to, and co-opted by, a segment of society that stands for values and ideas that the majority now finds obscene and repulsive.

Whereas "To hell with LSU" is just good common sense.

As someone who has lived on BOTH sides of the Mason Dixon line I can assure you that racism still exists in the Union states. Want proof??



I think as long as there are people of different ethnicities and colors there will be racial tensions and self imposed segregation. Have I heard people here in Alabama use derogatory terms for black people....yes. Have I heard people in NY and PA use derogatory terms for black people....yes.

What burns me is hearing someone use the "N" word pretty loosely and then hearing those same people cheer on their favorite college football team.....which has mostly black players. They are N's 6 days a week and heros 1 day a week. THAT isn't right.

Listen folks. If you want to think that someone is biggest piece of living excrement and complete waste of space and the air we breath....I think you have that right. I think as a society we're still trying to narrow that focus from labeling groups to individuals. I think there are INDIVIDUAL scum bags on this planet.

The stereotypical reflections offered above (from those who were raised in more northern climes and were taught "insightful stuff" by their T.V.'s, skoo-teecherz, and kolij fessers) were predicted. I've found (in particular) northeastern areas of the country (excepting in school and other quota situations) to be far more culturally segregated (to this day) that "the South", simply because there are more truly racist folk in "the north" (google "patronizing") who have the financial where-with-all to effectively segregate themselves.

Speaking as an instantly-identifiable member of a visible minority whose parents immigrated to the US, who grew up in the Middle Atlantic region, whose undergraduate and graduate education took place in three of the five largest US cities AND the nation's capital, and who over the course of my career to date has lived and worked in New England, the Middle Atlantic, the Midwest, the Southwest, Deep South, and who currently lives and works in the Old South, I can say without qualification or reservation that I and my family—both immediate and extended—have encountered FAR more prejudice and racial abuse in New England and the Middle Atlantic states than in the Deep and Old South, and that systemic prejudice, institutionalized discrimination, and de facto segregation are not only FAR more pervasive and FAR more acceptable socially, but also FAR more virulent along the I-95 corridor from Boston to Washington D.C. than anything I have encountered South of the VA-NC border and East of the Mississippi.

People need to pay attention to what is coming out of their mouths and what it means.

The vast majority of those who have presented themselves to me as "stooduntz of histree" are NOT aware that:

all during the War Between the States, slavery was LEGAL and was PRACTICED in the United States of America.

slavery was NOT made unconstitutional in the United States of America until WELL AFTER the end of the War Between the States and WELL AFTER the death of Lincoln.

This really isn't news. Allowing slavery at the time of the writing of the Constitution was our little 'deal with the Devil' that persuaded many states to go along with the proposition. We didn't answer the question, "Shall we or shall we not have slavery in the United States of America?" We put that off.

The Civil War did not start as an action to free the slaves. It was about states rights or the ability of an individual state to say what goes on inside its own borders. One of the issues was the decision over slavery in the new states to the West. Those in favor of retaining slavery were concerned that these new territories would outlaw slavery and that the national government was going to be controlled by representatives who may decide to outlaw slavery in the entire country. The fact that Lincoln was not even on the ballot in most of the Southern states in the election of 1861 looks to be the last straw for Southern interests.

Constitutional amendments take awhile to wander through the legislative system so it is not surprising that it took a few years to formally ban slavery in the Constitution. It's also true that many states- both North and South- had provisions in their state laws and procedures that treated one segment of the population diffrerently than another. Many of these provisions remained in place up until 1964-5 when a Southern president, helped by many other legislators from both North and South, passed a law banning them.
