So as someone who already has a K&M stand, do I understand correct that the top is interchangeable with the lighter one on the BB stand?
I am thinking so I could put the lighter BB top on the higher K&M stand for standing gigs.

I also like my harness - at last I don't get back ache carrying tuba! However, probably not much use for a 6/4 YamaYork!!!dentaltuba wrote:Consider a Meinl Weston tuba harness.

At the Army Conference this year, I'll pester Dave for that new top he promised me, or at the least make some comparisons. I'm thinking the answer to your question is yes, but the post is machined a little to fit the K&M top. I'm not sure if it will be machined the same way for the new top.Neptune wrote:So as someone who already has a K&M stand, do I understand correct that the top is interchangeable with the lighter one on the BB stand?

Poke him again. I eventually got a new top (identical to the DEG top), and I don't think I ever asked for it - it "just came in the mail". Maybe I have yours?Rick Denney wrote:Yes. The reason is obvious--they were buying the tops from K&M and let's just say that it wasn't a sustainable solution. The new tops are lighter, with a plastic shell and dense foam on the top.jsipes wrote:Rick-
Are you saying that they changed the design for the BBC stand from that awesome huge rubbery cup rest (as is shown in your pic) to something different?
I am not that big a fan of the K&M cup design, because the rubber material does get rubbed off like a pencil eraser, though so slowly as to negate any risk of wearing out in our lifetimes. I would prefer something a bit less grippy, and also less heavy.
Dave promised me a copy of the new top once upon a time, but I never pursued it with him. He does guarantee those tops for life, as I understand it.
Rick "who bought the BBC stand for the leg design" Denney
My take on the two cradles is: the K&M one is big and sturdy - but (for me) the tuba tends to rotate if you hold it at any kind of angle. I'm constantly re-adjusting. This might not be a problem if you position the tuba STRAIGHT up and down. The DEG foam is a bit stickier, and (for me) the tuba just stays put (I can "hold on" to the tuba with one finger). It's also smaller and lighter - but the foam should probably be considered a "consumable". Actually, it might be best to consider the entire top as a "consumable".
Right now, I carry the BBC stand with the K&M top in a DEG bag, in the bell of whatever horn I'm carrying. My DEG stand is constantly set up at home, and handles everything from the Besson EEb to the Conn 36J (obviously, at different heights - but the quick-release I installed makes changing height easy). It handles the 36J - but I suspect I may be pushing my luck there.
RealSoonNow, I plan to acquire another BBC stand (and another DEG bag). I expect that one (with the K&M top) will stay with the 36J and the other (with the DEG top) will travel with either the King or the Besson. The Yamaha YBB-621S doesn't need a stand (it might benefit from a euphonium pillow in the lap!)

Does anyone have a picture of how they look like ?
Is there no chance of damaging the bell ?
Thanks,
Wim

Hi Wim, I did have luck and Craig at Baltimore has dispatched stand to me. The email to use if you want one is sctbbc@yahoo.com" target="_blank (sorry, I did not know you wanted, or would have ordered another).
I will be passing through Belgium on 9th December on my way from Germany. If you are free to meet for lunch, PM me.

Here: http://www.cis.uab.edu/sloan/DEGbag.jpg is a quick and dirty iPhone + iPhoto auto-enhance picture of a BBC stand, with the original K&M saddle, in a DEG bag. Note the Velcro(TM) closure for the top flap, and the cloth handle (on your right).oedipoes wrote:

I have carried this in my bell (in a gig bag) for years with no obvious sign of damage. But...I'm sure that if you applied enough acceleration you *might* be able to induce a dent. I'm pretty sure you'd do more damage from the outside than from the padded bag on the inside.

I've just recieved my Baltimore stand via Neptune, and it's far better, more compact when folded, and less "trip overable" than my 2 current ones! Excellent design!Neptune wrote:Hi Wim, I did have luck and Craig at Baltimore has dispatched stand to me. Re: Anyone got pics of these 2 tuba stands?
I have now used my new Baltimore stand for a couple of gigs and think it is the next best I have found to the Tubassist to use, but usefully a lot more portable.
I like the lighter/smaller cradle than on the K&M stand as I have had trouble with the latter pushing open water keys while playing on certain tubas. The only thing I have found with the BB cradle is I have got water to collect there a couple times when using for my PT-15 (from emptying through my added Saturn water key), so I have drilled a drain hole near to the middle of the cradle. Using with larger Neptune overhanging the stand, this is not an issue.
The base of the BB stand is very nice, although I did find it slipped a bit on a smooth floor, so to correct that have stuck on little pads of non-slip material to the legs where contact is made to the floor.
I think I will be using the BB stand quite a lot!
