Big Tuba Concertos

Hello Guys,

I am a moderately proficient player and I only own a medium-large CC tuba. I have been asked to find Concertos for both Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. Do you know of any that will work for CC tuba?

The only concerto I know that was written for the Contrabass Tuba (CC Tuba) is Journey for Tuba and Orchestra by John Stevens.

I suggest you read this awesome article by David Zerkel. It gives a lot of clarity to something that's an issue for those of us with only a contrabass in our arsenal.

The Jackson, I agree with such an article. Big tubas should be melodic. But what I am looking for is a Concerto that is more specifically for a CC tuba, or at least more manageable tone wise.

Edward Gregson - Tuba Concerto would be my choice if I had to play concerto's again on my CC. If you have a decent high range it shouldn't be much of an issue.

I think the Gregson works well on CC. I almost played with such last time, but kept with Eb that time - but will certainly play on CC if I perform again.

I've recommended this before and do again now. Handel's g Minor Oboe Concerto works great on CC tuba. No need to transpose anything - just play it down 2 octaves. Lots of fun roulades and plenty of chances to get lyrical.

If not that then the next one I would say is the voun Williams Tube concerto.

Perhaps the "voun Williams Tube concerto" should be offered up on TubeNet. I'm just sayin'.

I have been working on the James Barnes "Tuba Concerto" for an audition. It works well for CC tuba. In fact, if I am not mistaken, Mr. Barnes wrote it with a contrabass tuba sound in mind. This concerto is excellently recorded by Patrick Sheridan on his "Storyteller" CD.

If it were up to me I would say you should probably do either the Edward Gregson (Which I as a 9th grade student did last year) since all 3 of its movements are great. If not that then the next one I would say is the voun Williams Tube concerto.

The Eugene Anderson concerto was written with the CC tuba in mind. The range gets pretty up there, but he writes it so that the upper range comes gradually. It is also a fairly long concerto at nearly 45 minutes

I vote for the Lebedev as well. Though, I personally prefer the original to the Ostrander arrangement.

I think listening to recording, that is my favorite of all tuba concertos. Would love to play some time

I am a big fan of the Barnes. I am not sure on availibility of parts for band or orchestra. I was lucky enough to study this work with Scott Watson (who it was written for). It was written for CC and the movements lay so well with CC fingers. I've tried it on E-flat and B-flat, but it's not the same as CC. I also like the fact that Barnes really captures the 'nature' of the big horn. If you are familiar with it, it is not an 'artsie' concerto. It takes skill, but it is fun to play AND listen to.....my .02
