Re: Update Update

Post by Rick Denney »

Looked through the TC book last night, and again wondered why the first tuba part is so unnecessarily tiring, especially considering that this director wants to play through twice to let the crowd sing the second time through. That means playing the whole book four times in one day (twice at the rehearsal, twice at the performance.) I have to play in a performance that night, including an intermission thing in the lobby with the brass quintet.

So, I am breaking with prior years and bringing the Holton and playing the second tuba part. (I'd being a 14K if I had to stand, which thank goodness I don't.) I'm tired of blowing my chops in 35-degree weather in the service of so-so arrangements.

Hopefully, somebody better than me will be prepared to cover those parts. I tried this experiment several years ago and ended up playing the high parts on my Bb tuba. I'm not doing it this time.

UPDATE:

Accompanied 27 brass students for juries today at OSU...some great playing all around! The Hindemith Trumpet Sonata at a very brisk pace was rather uncomfortable...

The Hindemiths all seemed to me to be more of a jury for the piano than the listed instrument. As an undergrad most of the time our juries would be accompanied by advanced students, but if you played a Hindemith you were sure to get the top dog, which was nice 'cause he was such a wonderful player!

After unbuckling him, he yelled "Get in house - dinosaurs here soon!"
Perhaps he knows something we don't.

It's raining. Had rehearsal today for church christmas tuba things....people got a kick out of the 'blokepiece', though I wasn't using it today.

Played in the New York City TubaChristmas today. Weather was about 45 degrees and rainy. I got soaked, but whatever, it was fun. But I guess I'll be buying a new book next year!

Harvey was scheduled to be there, but unfortunately wasn't able to make it. Not sure if it was weather-related or not.

Had the honor of playing behind the modern day Irish hymn writers, Keith and Kristyn Getty, this Saturday and Sunday. Note that I used the word hymn - although younger than I am; this gifted couple is crafting some of the most popular modern day hymns used in both contemporary and traditional worship, as opposed to "P&W choruses" that often ring hollow. It is wonderful to see people putting their hearts and minds into giving God the best they can, instead of the "good enough" attitude that so often pervades church music. Truly a blessing.

Monday sucked, Tuesday wasn't much better, and guess what? Today sucked too. Only four more days with students until Christmas break. :x

Anyone else ever notice that the space between the "e" and the "x" in the FedEx logo forms an arrow? I know it is a dumb observation, but I think it makes sense for the company (however intentional/unintentional it may be).

My commiserations--and what awful timing, too. I keep telling myself that God has a plan for us all. Hopefully you will emerge stronger. Good luck.

Having gone through this already, I wish you all the best. You deserve to be happy and although it may not seem like it now, things will get better.

How about, wishing you the best - best legal representation possible, among other things. Where I have had good dealings with lawyers, they were recommended by other lawyers.
