Re: Piccolo & Horn Polka and Yuba
Thanks for posting the cool stuff Bill!
For those of you who are wondering which tubas Buddy Hayes played:
1959 Piccolo & (Bass) Horn polka : Conn 24J 4 valve
1956 When Yuba Plays the Tuba down in Cuba: Besson 3 valve compensating
Watching the two videos, one can hear and see the progression from a Besson 3 valve in 1956 to a Conn 24J 4 valve in 1959.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed this, afterall this is not as delicate as hearing the grass grow.

Here's the Tiger Rag from 1956.

I'm sure that Mr. Hayes was happy to have his head rubbed by Welk on national television.

Re: Piccolo & Horn Polka and Yuba
I spoke with Guy LeGere about a special reed for my Linton contra-bass clarinet a while back. The reed is HUGE... a full 3/16" wider than a conventional bass clarinet reed. Guy sent me a couple of reeds that he said were 'standard fare' that he produces for bass saxophones in South America. It seems that bass saxes are popular in stage bands in South America and often replace tubas because they can sustain low notes longer than tubas.Timswisstuba wrote:snorlax wrote: Umm...what kind of bass clarinet is that in the beginning??
