Sorry Klaus, definately a Besson 3+1 comp.
Those valve tops look a little Conn-esque but they're the older Besson type as found on the New Standards etc. Slides on the 20J extend up as well as down and, although not super-clear, the compensating routing can be seen on these top pistons not to mention the 4th sticking out at the side.

How anyone could use the fourth valve and see anything save the bell is beyond me however...

Yup. Those 'crown' valve caps and the compensating loops are a dead give-away.

I've not played the 3+1 comp version, but I've played the 3-valve conventional version, and I could never figure out how to see around the bell, either! Yes, those fluted valve caps and gumdrop valve buttons are just like my Besson.

The tone, even allowing for the limitations of the recording & the YouTube, was Besson all the way, and did you notice he even had a couple of "stuffy" notes as he got into it?

Great musicianship, but not near the personality of the Bill Bell rendition! And the correct title for the piece is, "When Yuba Plays the Rhumba on the Tuba." (Original spelling of Rhumba is correct.)

Problem is - not his playing ability. The tuba was normally used as the "Bubble Machine" and hadn't been completely cleaned of bubble fluid after its last use.

I remember, when I was a little bloke, wathinc the show to see if the tuba would be used - most of the time it was merely an ornament. Hey, getting to be the player on LW was a solid career goal once upon a time.

So that's what it was! Even from the YouTube recording, it obviously was not the player's ability; I thought some condensation may have just got caught in a comp loop and caused the burble.

I always get a chuckle looking at your avatar. It reminds me of:

1. A dog I had which always sat in the drivers seat looking in the window of the pub who would honk the horn if I had more than 2 beers.

And

2. A shetland pony at a place I was working with horses at for a while. Everyday at Beer-O-Clock, 5 PM, on the dot he would come to my back door and want to have a beer - a local brew called "Carbine Stout". Carbine was a famous race horse here. Rather apt for a horse to drink "horse beer". Sometimes the dogs would join in and we'd have a good session. Didn't need to go to the pub to have good company.

Ken -- thanks. The nickname for the avatar is, "Underdog on his day off." Keeping with the British theme, notice that the Bass Ale red triangle, my favorite ale, has been photoshopped onto the beer bottle by my wife.

On another forum, long since gone, the owner/moderator thought I gave a particularly relevant piece of advice about a person dealing with a personal issue relating to their playing, and he bestowed me an avatar of Underdog in his classic flying upwards with both arms in the "biceps" pose. Even though I appreciated it, I thought it a little too presumptive to use elsewhere, hence this avatar.

My dad used to have an English Setter he went quail hunting with. After he died, the dog was mine until it died at the ripe old age of 17. I couldn't find an English setter for an avatar that I liked, but my wife found this picture, which she altered the beer bottle to suit, and there you go. My day job used to be the daily wear a suit and tie, and I do have a Stetson fedora with my overcoat that is remarkably similar to the picture as well.

And on another British note, years ago on a college trip I was in a pub in Cambridge just having dinner and a pint, and from across the pub with no prompting an immaculate golden retriever walked right over to me, smelled me once, and without command heeled right beside me as if to introduce himself, and stayed without command as I reached over to pet him between the ears. The befuddled owner came over and said the dog had never done anything like that before. I explained I used to own a bird dog and that bird dogs can sense that automatically and know I'm a friend.

But I digress. It's on bass guitar, not tuba, but on the LW special "Precious Memories," I have my own duet with Mary Lou Metzger, playing Maloof's part in the background, with her in front singing, "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands." Look for it during PBS fundraising week. It airs every third or fourth season or so.

Animals are funny (GOOD) aren't they? Often get dogs tied to their utes to be savage guards asking for a pat & chat - much to the owners surprise. A good one was a horse with a bad reputation for kicking which came over, lied down next to where I was sitting, put its head in my lap and went to sleep.

It is interesting that cattle and horses seem to especially like the sound of a tuba. Go try playing around a few of them some time. (Thought I better keep some "tuba content" going here!

My dog loves the tuba. Anytime I go to start practicing, he'll come in and lay almost at my feet (which is a bit of a joke on him if the horn drips spit)

That's just great Jamsav!! I watch lawrence welk every Saturday night on PBS but I have never saw that show and the one where Maloof plays that huge tuba with myron florn and cassel just great stuff thank you very much for brightening up my morning..........................bigbob
