I appreciate the offer, guys, especially Elephant. The cat had to be out of the house today, and I am positively not allowed pets where I live now (don't need to get thrown out of
another domicile...)
Well, I tried to do the right thing. I went to my old house and looked for a cardboard box but found none, so I just scooped up the cat and got back in my van. I drove about half an hour, cat "screaming" the whole time, to the "Humane Society". Their website said they were open today. When I got there cat in hand, they told me I had to make an appointment to drop off an animal, the soonest being Monday when I had to work. They also told me there was a $15.00 fee. I can't afford that; I couldn't even afford the round trip gas money there once, never mind two round trips. Despite my pleas, they adamantly would not take the animal, but instead stuffed directions to Metro animal control in my hand. During the drive, the cat finally got quiet. I found out why when I arrived. She had wedged herself under the driver's seat, almost jammed in the adjusting mechanism. In the 20 degree weather, I tried my best to extract her, but could not. I finally went into animal control, and they sent someone who was able to coax her out and put her in a carrier. I signed the papers and left. They seemed friendly, and the cat may wind up back at the inHumane Society next week anyway, sans my $15.00.
I spent the next couple hours removing poorly hung window treatments and patching gaping holes, and precisely mounting three sets of "faux wood" two inch blinds. They do look good; she spent enough money on them. Ironically, I get to spend the night in my house because I have to watch the kids while she got called off to cover an overnight shift. And there is food in the fridge.
