Besson 995 CC tuba $5000 *Pictures Added*

Post by Tubaman485 »

This is very painful for me but I must sell my 995. It's a great horn with a terrific sound. It is still playable but the leadpipe will need to be replaced as it's beginning to crack and the 5th valve linkage has broken. The repairs sound big but definitely a small price to pay for the price I'm selling the horn for. I will include the Besson hard case, protec gig bag, pt-50, pt-48, and dillon s-3 mouthpieces. I can also include my method books and some repertoire as I no longer play. Pictures will be available tomorrow. $5000 OBO. I'm located in mesa arizona but I'm willing to ship if needed. Thanks.

Bigbob,

I'll attempt to answer for tubaman. The 995 is a large 4/4 size. It is almost a direct copy of the Nirschl 4/4 apart from the leadpipe I believe, nirschl may have also helped design/build these instruments. They are a 4 piston + 1 rotor combo. I have not played the besson, but I have played the nirschl and they are fantastic, especially for ergonomics.

Cheers

Anyone know how the leadpipes are different?

I mean, the Besson has 45 degree 'bend', and the Nirschl has a 'gradual, sloping curve', but aside from that, anything different as far as the taper/bore?

Since the leadpipe will need to replaced soon on the Besson in question, can you just order a Nirschl leadpipe and put it on?

I was thinking the same thing....check these two photos its looks identical and says the bore is the same size...wwbw also says that the 995 is a Nirschl design.

At this price I wish I had a good excuse!

Concerning the leadpipe replacement, the redesigned version of the 995 has a more open leadpipe and it is not attached to the bell like the previous models. A little more lively playing horn. I played the horn at NAMM last year and was quite impressed with the improvement even though I have a great older 995(thank you Andy Smith). You might look into replacing it from Coutois/Besson now that the horn is in production.

If it is available as a NOS part, you could try:

or Mark Carter aka Mr. Tuba in Wales.

Bigbob thanks for your concern, I am doing just fine. I went to school for music and decided it wasn't for me. If only I knew that would have happened 4 years earlier and several thousand dollars. No point taking it out on a great and perfectly innocent horn.
I'd like to clarify what might be taken as a misunderstanding. The 5th valve rotor is still in working condition, it is the piece from the trigger to the rotor that has broken. I bet some of you repair gurus could even say that's an easy fix. But since I haven't played much in the last 3 years I haven't fixed it.
Here's some additional information on the horn, it is one of the earlier models in the first year they were made. It has the 45 degree bend in the leadpipe as opposed to the gradual curve on the newer models. It's classified as a 4/4 horn but it is definitely a bigger 4/4. It's got a big fat sound, good range, sharp on the C# like all the other 995s, and a great low register. In fact the low register was my favorite part. Hope this helps, anyone local can feel free to contact me for test playing.
