Missing Tuba/Tubist

While were on the subject of missing/maybe stolen/etc.... be on the lookout for a small Amati Eb three-piston upright lacquered brass tuba in the Killeen, Texas area. I loaned it to a fellow there back in August of 2007.

Yes. He no longer responds to any attempt at communications. I've tried private emails and phone calls. I don't want to post all of his information publicly. If you think you have knowledge of the whereabouts of Tom Kurczewski... drop me an email or pm.

Well.... I just don't know. I think we was released from the military a couple of years ago because of some ongoing health concerns... nothing life-threatening (I don't think)... just enough of a problem to keep him from working. I heard from him on November 10, 2009 but haven't heard from him since. It does sort of make a guy wonder.

The area of Killeen, Texas is so transient (Fort Hood) that I haven't tried contacting any public agencies there.

I think he got some sort of spinal injury in Iraq. He may be hospitalized.

Yes... he had some sort of disability back in 2007 and I think was discharged. We corresponded as late as November of 2009. I've heard nothing since.

As a 'last resort' I wrote to the City of Killeen Department of Public Records this morning. I really would like to know what happened to the guy.

Try to contact Ken Woods in Harker Heights. He is a professional euphonium player and owns "The Band Room" music store and repair business for the greater Killeen Area. He knows pretty much knows every low brass player in the area or at least knows of how to contact them. His number is 254-699-2263. Good luck

I have found that writing government offices of any kind is a waste of time. However, if you call and speak to someone who is feeling helpful, you may get somewhere.

I sympathize. Before the Internet and cell phones, I sent a tuba 'on approval' to the tubist in one of the 'second level' orchestras. After three months, he quit answering letters and phone calls. After six months, I was on the verge of flying out to salvage something when the tuba arrived, without warning and without explanation. I found out later he'd used it while the orchestra was on tour in Europe and sent it back because he was through with it.

It took about two more instances like that before I became distrustful.

I don't expect much cooperation out of the Killeen local government but I can at least say that I tried.

Oh... it's not so much the horn. It's just a small Eb Amati that I had little use for, anyway. I'm equally concerned about the fellow's welfare. If I discover that he's OK and just ignoring me.... then I'll probably tend to take the whole matter personally and get really upset.

I plan to be in Plano in April for the Association of Concert Bands convention. It's a bit of a stretch. But... I may just run over to Killeen and have a look for myself!

Killeen is a bit of a stretch from DFW, about 150 miles. But if you've already driven to Dallas might as well go on down to Killeen and get some barbeque.
