WTK: PROPER Euph MPC recommendation?

Post by Steve Inman »

Okay -- let me change the question -- based on quite a bit of collective wisdom.

Let's assume I want the "right" mpc for a King 2280 -- in order to sound like a euph, with decent, full tone.

From a bit of reading / searching, it sounds like I should consider some of the following, if I don't want something exotic (and I don't):

Schilke 51D, Wick SM3, Wick SM 3.5, Wick SM2 (maybe), Bach 5

Did I miss anything important?

Thanks,

Steve,

I've never played that horn but would offer this advice. Different mpcs work differently for different players. That being said, I would encourage a mpc that allows for a full throaty low register but not be stuffy around upper BBb; a lot of those factors can be player influenced though.

I am strictly a euphonium player at this point and play the SM3.5. Love it. But I tried almost every one of the ones you listed until I decided it was the right one for me. I would buy several, decide the one you want, and return the rest. That way you are just out shipping costs plus the mpc. But that's a good way to go about deciding, IMO. The traditional mpc for euphs is the Schilke 51D, good, solid mpc.

Hey,
The Bowman BB1 for me is the perfect doubler mouthpiece. The rim is real sharp so notes slot easy and it gets a good euph sound (at least on my YEP 641). Slurring is easier on something like the Mead MPC's, but I think for all around playing (getting through the gig) the Bowman works for me and are like $95 or so:

You are quite correct! However, it's so much more convenient to ask them to ship me 3 of 'em, so I can test them out in the comfort of my own living room. (Also, since i don't have a clue about how to play the teenie ^H^H^H^H^H^H tenor tuba, I don't want to embarass myself testing mpcs in public!)

Seems like that would be even more reason to visit WWBW -- I'd bet Roger would be able to give you some playing tips & advice. :)
