Brass Fest, West Chester, PA

Post by Jonathan Fowler »

I know this should be in the "Upcoming Events" section, but with less than 4 weeks to go, I hope it's OK to post here for a day.

West Chester University in the Philadelphia area will be hosting the 2010 International Brass Fest. If those dates sound familiar, it is because it is the same weekend as the Army Tuba Conference.

The artists will be presenting recitals, masterclasses as well as nightly concerts with the WCUPA wind ensemble and Criterions Jazz Band as accompaniment for the soloists.
Some of our artists are:

Joe Burgstaller
Vince DiMartino
David Krauss (Met Opera)
David Jolley
Adam Unsworth
Nizan Haroz
Jim Pugh
Tom McCaslin
Paul Mergen
Eric Spinelli
and many more...

Please take a minute to check out the webpage and pass it along to a friend, this has been a great event in the past and we're hoping for a wonderful time again this year

Thanks for reading!

I'd like to thank Paul Mergen, Tom McCaslin and Eric Spinelli for helping me with the BrassFest this last weekend. They are world class players and teachers.

Thanks again!

I'd like to take this chance to tell everyone what a great event West Chester University has created and a big thank-you to Jon Fowler for being such a great host. This was the first year that the festival expanded to all the brass instruments. Formerly it was just Trumpet. There was literally something to attend for every instrument from 8am-10pm both days.

Highlights for me were hearing the great playing and teaching with Paul Mergen , Eric Spinelli and Jon Fowler. What was also great was the laid back attitude and accessibility of all the artists to the students and attendees.

On the non-tuba side of things I have to highlight several things. Nitzan Haroz, principal Trombone in Philadelphia, gave an amazing recital. There was a fantastic Q&A with Adam Unsworth, Elizabeth Pfaffle, and David Jolley. Eric Ewazen gave a wonderful discussion/recital where he discussed his music and then performed movements of 3 pieces with different soloists. How inspiring! Also, the band concert on Saturday night which featured 6 soloists and the WCU faculty brass 5tet playing Eric Ewazen's "Shawdowcatcher" was outstanding.

If you have the chance please check out this event in future years. Truly world class stuff!!
