I think the Rudy is pretty much the only playable BAT bigger than the Alex 164 - which is also immense. But the Alex would ultimately orbit a Rudy 6/4.

The Holton is a "main stream" 6/4, the classic American BAT. Not much is going to compete with it.

It is Euros - 4250 = about $5800 to you

I think I remember hearing that the Melton 6/4 uses the same bell as the Neptune - so I reckon would produce great sound :P

Has the 6/4 Melton (under either the Melton or M-W nomenclature) ever been shown in the US at TubaDome, a dealer, or an exhibit?

Iv'e seen this before but can't remember the location of the website. It's in a manufacturer's museum. It was made specially to be "big". As I remember it, the author of the website played it and said the only thing it had going for it was that it was big.

Maybe Bandmaster remembers where he got it...

It seems to me that those triple XXXb gianormous tubas are only really novelty items to impress with their physical size. The Rudolf Meinl 6/4 must be the largest tuba* that has any real musical performance value?

*Although don't forget the Conn Jumbo 46K/48K sousaphone which must be just as big as the Rudy (maybe even bigger?) - but just in a different shape.

So...what would it take to cut it to CC?

Here is a picture Lee Stofer took of a Silver 6/4 Rudy BBb and a Lacquer 5/4 Rudy BBb, similar height, just thicker.

Thanks Neptune, I was using the Neotech harness, thinking about getting the MW now.
It looks like the 5/4 has a removable leadpipe, while the 6/4 does not.
They call the 5/4 "Bayreuth", I wonder if the Big Guy has a name? :tuba:

I believe Lee told me it was 26mm at the 4th valve. Either going in or coming out, I don't remember. But in either case that is huge, over an inch. It played that big too. This is not your "Old Man's Tuba".
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.
