but, even with the legal mumbo-jumbo, do not destroy the paperwork/handheld computer that the census worker has, doing so will result in being charged with a crime for it...

Maybe I'm just too young or naive, but why does answering some questions on a sheet about yourself for the government constitute some heinous invasion of privacy?

Hey! I like violas and viola players in general. I was merely reporting my surprise in finding that viola jokes had spread to the double bass section. There are certainly enough brass player stereotype jokes out there too, just ask any string player if you have a few minutes to listen. They are generally pretty funny too, particularly the trumpet player jokes.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

I long for the restoration, however, of a "representative republic".
The two things that have, more than anything else, moved us away from a representative republic and toward a representative democracy are the 14th and 17th amendments - both of which were ratified by a lot more Americans than ratified the original constitution. Another step in that direction, that is being discussed, would be the elimination of the electoral college in favor of direct election.

Not arguing which is better - just saying that the United States of America has deliberately chosen, through the originally established constitutional amendment process, to move in that direction.

Does anyone else think that is ludicrous? My feeble mind starts reeling when I think of the postage cost to send those letters to EVERYONE.

Mine looks to me like
  • Spanish
  • Chinese (classic, not simplified - but not real sure about that.)
  • Korean
  • Vietnamese
  • Russian (or some other language commonly written in Cyrillic.)

In my opinion, there is not doubt whatsoever. It is totally ludicrous.

Yeah, it's not like there's anything to it - just send them the forms, let folks fill them out and mail them back. Just because it's worth 4 pages of blabber on a tuba bulletin board doesn't mean that, in the real world, people could be expected to have any interest in the issues around filling out a simple census form, right?

I'm very excited to thoroughly complete my census form. In fact, I love talking about myself so much I intend to include some supplementary material to ensure that they get to know the real me.

A decent troll that takes advantage of people's lack of knowledge of what questions are asked on the census form.

Trumpet players are the brass players whose psyche most resembles that of oboe players. Only trumpet players are worse.

I have only rarely met a low brass player who cannot talk Donald Duck. That was how I knew I R one.

I did not realize tuba players where such bomb throwing, radical anarchists. I have mellowed out since my wild and crazy college days. Now I am married to a census taker. I've sold out to the system, especially when my census taker wife calls me to pull her out when she gets stuck.

Yours truly,

Someday, when you are older and an employer, give job seekers an employment application that asks what their race is and then see what the government does to you.

I'm curious if other countries do a census and how often they do it. Perhaps some of our non-USA forum members could chime in on this and how much information they are asked to supply for their census if they have one.

Luke 2:1-3

1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to his own town to register.

It's been pretty popular for a while. At least these days you don't have to physically travel to the place of your birth like some kind of salmon. Here's another goody from the OLD testament:

Exodus 30:11-16

11 Then the LORD said to Moses, 12 "When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the LORD a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them. 13 Each one who crosses over to those already counted is to give a half shekel, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs. This half shekel is an offering to the LORD. 14 All who cross over, those twenty years old or more, are to give an offering to the LORD. 15 The rich are not to give more than a half shekel and the poor are not to give less when you make the offering to the LORD to atone for your lives. 16 Receive the atonement money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the Tent of Meeting. It will be a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD, making atonement for your lives."

So, see...it could be worse. At least you don't have to pay a ransom for your life when you're counted by the government.

Todd did you use LJV's Time Machine to go way way back in Time? :P I was looking for something more akin to Modern History not Ancient History. :)
