Several months ago I put a European to American shank adapter in my small Yamaha F that made a pretty big change(I think for the better) in the horn. If you have one of these horns but not the adapter you can experiment with using a larger shank mouthpiece on the horn than typical. The receiver on this model is the standard size, so the larger shank adapter/mouthpiece doesn't go in as far. This also brought the pitch down so I don't have to pull the main slide out quite as far. That, in itself, might cause a slight improvement.
I have several of these adapters that I'll sell to anyone interested. They used to be available at Dillon's, but I don't think they handle them anymore. BTW I'm not talking about the big Dillon AGR here. This is just a simple tapered tube that fits in the receiver of the instrument. I've also found these adapters very helpful in checking any horn to see if adjusting the receiver gap on a permanent basis is a good thing.
I'd be very interested to read anyone else's observations on this topic.

Wouldn't a straight sousa bit do the same thing?

Is there such a thing as a straight sousa bit? The straightest sousaphone bit I've seen is made by Jupiter, but it's about 20 degrees off of being straight. However, I am far from being a sousaphone bit expert.Bob Kolada wrote:Wouldn't a straight sousa bit do the same thing?

Would something like this work to bring down the pitch of my ybb-103? The only thing I don't love about that little tuba is that I have to pull the main slide nearly all the way out. A souzy bit doesn't fit.Sam Gnagey wrote:the larger shank adapter/mouthpiece doesn't go in as far. This also brought the pitch down so I don't have to pull the main slide out quite as far. If this would fit, would I be required to then use a new mouthpiece? I wasn't really looking to change. I just thought this might help lower the pitch on my little horn.
Thanks,

Yes, it would bring the pitch down. For the 103 you might try a Conn sousaphone bit which would bring it down even farther.kegmcnabb wrote:Would something like this work to bring down the pitch of my ybb-103? There are straight sousa bits, for sure. The ones that go in the mpc before the "bent" one.cjk wrote:Is there such a thing as a straight sousa bit?
