U. S. Marine Band on CBS - 12/21, 9pm

Tomorrow night (Dec. 21) CBS is broadcasting the Kennedy Center Honors at 9:00 pm ET/PT. Among the recipients this year is composer John Williams. At the conclusion of the segment honoring his body of work in the film industry, the United States Marine Band performs a short medley of some of Williams' best-known music. Conducting the Marine Band is Leonard Slatkin, Director of the National Symphony Orchestra.

We taped the segment earlier this month. The music used comes from Star Wars, Jaws, Superman, Harry Potter, Raiders Of The Lost Ark, and E.T. Paul Lavender did the arrangement, sticking to the original orchestral scores as closely as possible, and, being a tuba player himself, gave us lots of good stuff to play. We haven't heard the final mix, so none of us really know how it will sound until it airs tomorrow night.

I can tell you that it was a pretty big rush to be sitting on that stage. There was no shortage of adrenalin. Definitely not our usual concert appearance! We played right after Itzhak Perlman performed the theme from "Schindler's List." No pressure!

I see that Chris got a lot of screen time. Leave it to the new guy to get all the exposure...

Typical of you guys to put out another top-shelf performance, too. We expect to hear it, and you always deliver.

Great performance!!! The emotion was really there... the last few chords of ET almost brought me to tears... just the like the movie score did. The mix was beautiful, I heard every note the tubas played.

I got home just in time to catch the performance. It was top-notch. Even on my 25" TV, I heard good balance. Normally, the tuba sound never makes it through. On this one, it did.

You guys made us all proud. And when the audience at the Kennedy Center stood up, so did I, right in my den. KUDOS!!!

Tubas on the job were, Cameron Gates, Tom Holtz and Mark Thiele. Cameron will be thrilled to learn he looks like Chris Tiedeman on camera! Tom tells me there was also a Harry Potter segment that was totally excised in the cutting room- talk about smooth edits.

Cameron will be thrilled only because he wishes he looked as good as Chris Tiedeman. At least he's still pretty enough to be our media darling. More likely, there was another Oregon Ducks fan working the camera.

Big thanks to whoever mixed the sound. I may have to fast forward the videotape and search the credits to find out who hooked us up. Our sound engineer was there, but he wasn't running the board. Whoever you are, I'd like to buy you a beer or two.

I only caught the "ET" portion after I got home from our own holiday concert. Darn! But what I heard sounded great. Wish I had heard it all. Looks like Mr. John Williams liked it as well.

Great job, just too short. I diagree on the mixing though. The dynamic levels were very inconsistant on my end, and the editing in general was poor. I could hear the tubas often which was nice. Caught me off guard at first;)

I have it recorded om my PVR. I'm going to try and get it on DVD/VCD next week. If the J.W. section is small enough I'll email it to interested parties. I can try to fit just taht on a VCD and cabn get one or two to pass around.

Maybe CBS won't mind

Ah, ok -- I'll have to review the tape again.

I don't know about getting your dog, but I'll look for you on the parade deck this summer. I almost pulled a tenor sax to the ground before, ya know...
