Meinl Weston Thor 5450 Gig Bag?

Post by buzzmondo »

I was wondering what gig bag would be appropriate for the Meinl Weston Thor 5450? I am looking for a cronkhite but have no clue which bag to choose

Meinl Weston has their own aluminum flight case available for this tuba.

They are unlikely to be in stock, but a MW dealer can order one for you. Cost is upward of $1k.

At the risk of being overly repetitious, Steve Ferguson's website (Hornguys) contains a list of all the "stock" Cronkhite tuba cases:

I own several. They are great bags. One time I had a rivet pop on "bone case handle. Glenn fixed it and had it back to me within 48 hours. I also want to put in a plug for Horguys when buying one of these cases. They have aclose relathionship with GC himself and can get one of these for you quite fast.

Check out a Unitec case too. I have a custom one for my Thor, and it didn't cost what MW was going to charge. They have flight cases available, and from what I understand, they make them when you order them specifically for the horn. Someone much more knowledgeable can probably fill in the gaps of this post....

Tubadome.com has the unitec flight cases. I will say that if you are actually going to fly with it, it is cheaper to buy a ticket for it and put it in the gig bag in the seat next to you. The unitec cases are quite heavy and you will pay an arm and a leg to check the horn. I had a custom flight case made for my thor from Cabbage Cases. Bud Heckly is a great guy and can quote you a case over the phone. It is made of ABS plastic with support rods inside. Its the only way you can check it and keep it under the 70 lbs. weight restriction. I strongly recommend something reinforced if you plan on flying with it.

Let me know if you are interested and I will get you their number.

p.s. I think I paid $500 or so brand new

This is mentioned every now and then...

I'd love to hear about someone's experiences with having done this in the last 6 months or so. It seems like it would be very difficult to pull this off and that you'd be SOL if they refused it or forced you to gate check it.

Just wondering.
