Okay folks, it is the time of year again for colleges to starting opening positions for tuba/euphonium players.

Here is one so far:

Assistant Professor of Music

The University of Delaware is seeking applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Music. The Department of Music comprises 60 full-and part-time faculty and professionals, and enrolls approximately 340 undergraduate majors, minors and graduate students. A Ph.D. or equivalent professional experience is required. Performance/teaching experience with solo, orchestral and jazz literature is essential. Not surprised here. Many universities are still undergoing budget cuts. Hiring freezes are commonplace.

A new reality that is going to shape the market in higher education is that it is cheaper to hire a professional player who has recently left the orchestral scene than to cough up the dough for a tenure-track position.

My semi-informed gut feeling is that universities in general will gradually shift away from tenure-track positions in all fields. That shift is already happening at some institutions.

Tubists who hope to teach at the college level are best advised to have a primary skill other than tuba (conducting, theory, history or athletic-band directing). Tuba can be a bit of an afterthought in higher ed, in all but the biggest and strongest schools. (Speaking of the US market.) "We need a new band director. They play oboe/tuba on the side? Great, sign them up!"

The last couple of years there have been quite a few tenure-track tuba/euphonium positions available so this year is dry in comparison. I believe there are two factors behind this. First, many schools are on hiring freezes especially for new faculty lines. In other words, if a position was not already in place, universities are not going to create one. My position is about three years old and came about due to a massive growth in students in the instrumental music department at my university. These types of "new" positions are not being created due to economic climate.

Second issue, some professors who are at or near retirement age seem to be waiting until the current economic conditions improve before they retire. This would delay currently established positions to become open.

I do believe that universities are very money conscious right now. However if there is enough students to meet the need, there will still be positions at those schools. I think a big concern with hiring trends at universities is the movement to hire "full-time" adjuncts. Same teaching load, half the pay, no benefits. As current professors retire, this maybe how some of these positions are filled.

Music: Low Brass/Assistant Director of Bands. University of Tennessee at Martin, Assistant Professor of Music (full-time, tenure-track). Responsibilities: teach and recruit for low brass studio (trombone, euphonium, and tuba). Additional responsibilities assisting with the UTM Bands. Candidate may teach courses in music education as needed such as conducting, brass methods, and student teacher supervision. May teach other classes commensurate with departmental needs and individual expertise. Qualifications: performer on trombone, tuba, or euphonium; qualified to teach all low brass. Three years public school experience preferred, college teaching desirable. Master's required, doctorate required for assistant professor rank and tenure consideration at any rank. FYI, I have been offered and accepted the assistant band director/director of athletic bands/euphonium/tuba/trombone/music education/band secretary/landscaping/cheerleading gig at the University of West Georgia in Carrollton. Woot!

Congrats Cale! I taught tuba-euph there as an adjunct many moons ago. A tuba lesson in one of those tiny closet offices behind the main office is quite an experience!

I've decided to continue in my tenured position at Whatsamatta U. I'll still be teaching tuba, euphonium, cimbasso, and flying squirrel navigation lessons.

I had to quit my tenured position at Whatsamatta Ya Face U., just down the road from there. They are probably accepting applications, resumes, etc., right now.

I finally had to face it. I didn't know what was the matter.

Are you sure that check bounced? I still had checks, so I still should have had money. At any rate,you still owe me for the dinner I paid for after Richard Gere's "Gerbil Etiquette" Forum.
