Bloke: this is good advice, especially for graduating seniors from high school/college. I hope you do not have employees who are misbehaving. They may not get the message from a posting on TubeNet.

suggestions (for what they're worth) to those who are employed and would like to continue to be so:

- Do everything you're supposed to do.
- If you are able, do more than that. It compensates somewhat for the times that you screw up and cost your employer money.
- Realize that "lunch break" and other "breaks" are for your benefit and do not contribute to your employer's enterprises. Many employers eat lunch while they continue to work.
- Understand that your gross pay (even if you have no retirement or medical benefits) is significantly less than 90% of your employer's cost of hiring you.
- Don't waste your breath bragging to your employer how capable and honest you are.
- Don't talk about your employer (or his family) behind his back. Within hours, he will have heard about it.
- Do what you're told, rather than completely otherwise.
- Don't scold and cuss your employer when you do completely otherwise and are told to go back and do as you were told.
- Work toward your employer's agenda, rather than your own.
- Do not try to work "side deals" behind your employer's back. He's not as stupid as he seems, he knows exactly what you're up to, and will only put up with that crap until the moment it isn't worth it anymore.
- Don't try to "trick" your employer regarding the number of hours you work or the amount of effort you put forth. Again, he's not as stupid as he seems, he knows exactly what you're up to, and he's only putting up with your games until the moment it isn't worth it anymore.
- Every day that you "sneak" out early (yes, even if you work "in the field"), your employer knows precisely when you left. Again, he's not as stupid as he seems, he knows exactly what you're up to, and he's only putting up with your games until the moment it isn't worth it anymore.

I would add the following:

- Your boss is not your pal or your buddy--always keep that in mind and show the proper respect.
- If you are scheduled for work at 7am, be on the property at least by 6:30am--be ready to work at 7am.
- Do not show up for work smelling of alcohol, tobacco, or body odor--its a sure fire way of getting sent home...perhaps for good.
- Some bosses like to yell, scream, berate others--If you have such a boss, you will have to decide if its worth the salary you are receiving once it happens to you (and it will).
- Some bosses like to cut corners, bend (or break) rules--do not get involved with that ever.
- Your job and your social life should NEVER mix...NEVER.
- Be trained in at least 2 job fields and keep your resume current--you never know when you will be laid off or when a better opportunity shows up.

Ready to attend a graduation party for a Absarokee High School graduate who is going to PLU (Pacific Lutheran University) on a musical scholarship/vocal - full ride. To my knowledge I have seen more graduates from AHS get scholarships through music than I have seen sports scholarships. Who says an interest in music is not worthwhile?

I played in my first church service this morning (in the church's group). It was a blast! The director gave me some charts before it started, but those were only useful for about half of the tunes. For the rest, I just kept my eyes on the organist's feet and the pianist's left hand. Totally awesome fun time and I will be going back.

Work Update: Not a 41% private sector, but as a Deputy Sheriff, I am a guvment employee. Same standards hold.

How soon will it be before most of us feel it is appropriate to hoot, holler, and ridicule (ie: make sure that we are noticed as being "clever individuals") at weddings...

Here's what I don't get...
Whenever a baby is born, the first thing people ask is, "How much did the baby weigh?" Another common question these days is, "How long is the baby?"
Perhaps during a wedding, people should call out and ask how much the bride weighs. And how long the groom is.

During my HS graduation (in a college field house), people got kicked out for blowing air horns. It was pretty tacky, from the 15 verbal warnings "you will be ejected if you use an airhorn," to using the airhorn, to watching the cops escort someone out. Good times.

More memorable was the principal's speech, which was to the effect of "Enjoy today, but not too much. If you think this is the best thing that will happen in your life, you are mistaken. This is small beans compared to what awaits in your future." It was meant as an inspirational speech, that great things are to come in the future, and don't see this as the end of anything. But it sounded like "this isn't a big deal, don't make a big deal out of it."

Granted, I agreed with him. But he got quite a chilled applause and not a lot of happy parents after that one!

That is "The" general theme of commencement speeches, because to "commence" is to begin. Your principal's delivery/choice of words was off.

Absolutely. Different word choice and it would have been the same canned speech you'll hear anywhere. The poor word choice was amusing though. HS graduation was never a big thing for me.

A few days ago, I played at a big concert at a local high school that had a number of different groups performing, from the host high school as well as from other schools. The band director of the host school is a pretty big name in the local school band community and the concert was his last as band director of the school (after at least 25-30 years teaching).

The point was made orally just before the concert began that the evening was to be a classy and dignified one and that hooting and hollering was not the way to show appreciation for the music. Hearing the buffoonery from that audience, it's too easy to see why he would want to leave.


I played a college graduation a year ago with the college's community wind band. The college is a local community college that serves as a common "I'll just go to" school for many high school failures (who, of course, become community college failures). At the ceremony, a young man decided to blow an air horn. Nothing became of the first two horn shots, but the third brought a trio of security officers (two flanking, one at the nearest exit ) to the man.

What really struck me was not that the fool blasted that thing inside an arena, though. When the officer gestured for the guy to stand up and be escorted out of the building, the guy offers the officer the air horn instead.
