From what I've read here on TubeNet, brass players in German orchestras traditionally have used rotary-valve instruments in Bb, F and BBb. This afternoon, however, I saw a clip of members of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra in which piston trumpets in C were being used. Not that it matters very much, but could this mean that traditions are changing and we might soon be seeing piston C tubas in German orchestras?

While in Germany two years ago I went to concert of the Munich Philharmonic playing Mahler 9 - and was expecting to hear with rotary F tuba as the part is marked 'Basstuba'. So was surprised when the tubist came out onto stage carrying a York style 6/4 piston CC!

So we already are...

Although a second tubist to play a modern piece (name I do not remember) was using a traditional Melton 25 4/4 BBb. What a contrast in tubas when together - one short and tubby, the other tall and slender they looked rather like Laurel and Hardy
