I beg your pardon! For some of us that's our primary instrument!MartyNeilan wrote:NOBODY really needs an Eb tuba .![]()

Nope, what one really needs is an oversized BBb tuba with a right-sized bore, and their name engraved on the back of the bell
(Not that I know anything about such instruments...)
Back on topic, the same guy making those cool new tubas can also supply a more "traditional" bell for said instrument, with out without my name in elaborate engraving

I'm not a Facebook person, but I happened to stumble upon these pictures on Dillon Music's Facebook page.

The bore size on the 4-top-piston model 33 is .656", and although the instrument does not look particularly large, the response is open and plenty of sound comes from the over-19" bell.
I plan to show these instruments at the Army Tuba Conference January 29-30.

The collaboration of Treece/Carpenter/Kanstul has really created a warm tone and agile response - very York like! I spent three days at Namm with all four tubas - it is a real testament to great design when I say I couldn't decide which was my favorite.

Re: New Kanstul tuba pictures
You know, Bob was right. I brought the Conn Giant to orchestra rehearsal last night for Flying Dutchman and Russian Easter Overture. It was perfect. It had the "girth" and presence of sound you can not get with an F or a small CC, yet it maintained that timbre without overpowering, the way a true 6/4 contrabass BAT might. I honestly could not think of a better horn for playing the last section of Russian Easter Overture - just visualizing a bunch of stocky Russian Orthodox men (vodka in hand) belting out the choruses as I play it.Bob Kolada wrote:More accurately, nobody really needs a C tuba (Chinese or otherwise).MartyNeilan wrote:NOBODY really needs an Eb tuba .![]()

But I suppose you're right. It's much better to have an stuffy, boring F tuba (with "the sound" that most people can't even seem to produce on it) and a big, tubby, out-of-tune C tuba.x2

I'm not sure these tubas are available yet, but your best bet is Dillon Music, a Kanstul dealer. Contact Matt or Davin at Dillons to see when they'll have one in stock.djwpe wrote:So, having missed trying these at TUSABTEC, is there anywhere within a reasonable distance of NYC that has the Model 33 BBb Kanstul in stock for a playing test?

Remember that Zig's business model is to keep as low an inventory as possible and still supply demand, even if it has to be only on a made-to-order basis. The fact that there are so many in the pictures already is quite a step.Barney wrote:I'm not sure these tubas are available yet, but your best bet is Dillon Music, a Kanstul dealer. Hi everyone, this is to reward all those patient folks who scroll to all the back pages. Just got my 33-S in lacquer and took pix. Please note the alloy bell is visible in lacquer, the engraving on the production horns, and the new rewrap of the 5th valve tubing--they really listen to you at those trade shows! This is the warmest easy to blow tuba I have ever played.

Re: New Kanstul tuba pictures
What is the story with the revised 5th slide layout - is it longer and re-wrapped to make it a 23 alternate?

This is one of those rare circumstances that the guys who researched it and Zig could seriously all say they would tell you, but then they'd have to kill you.rodgeman wrote:Nice horn. What mix is the alloy?

The only thing I can say is that it is an authentic copy of the J.W. York Live metal formula. It looks like a high copper content Red or Rose brass but it is much much more than that. I'm sure it is in a safe somewhere and probably insured by Loyds of London, and Zig may have swallowed the key.....

To Cam and everyone, the fifth valve is still a flat whole step , it has been rewrapped to be better accessible and won't get snagged on things, saving your water keys.
