Klaus,

I am working through "2 Swedish Folk Melodies" by Svendson for string orchestra. I have tried numerous translation programs, but as my computer is unable to do an umlaut, or the Swedish equivalent, I was hoping you may be able to help work this out for me.

1. Allt under himmelens faste- there is an umlaut over the a in faste. Translation program gave me "All under Heaven" and nothing for the last word

2. Du gamla, du friska, du fjellhoga Nord- umlaut over the o in fjellhoga. Translation program gave me "You are Old, You are healthy," and then nothing for the last two words. Nord I am assuming means North.

I thought maybe these were German iterations of the original Swedish, but I got total gibberish with a German translator. Thanks in Advance.

Allt under himmelens fäste appears in the Jussi Bjorling collection of Swedish National Romantic Folk Songs as "Beneath the Dome of the Sky."

Du gamla, du friska, du fjellhöga Nord is, I believe, the first line of the Swedish National Anthem, which is usually translated something like, "Thou ancient, thou free and mountainous North."

For Windows, it involves holding the ALT key while typing a special 3 or 4 digit code. Here's a pretty good list I found a while back.

My active Swedish is very limited, but as all Danes of my generation I have been taught reading it.

Your rendition of the title of the Swedish national anthem is wrong. The right verses should be here:

A translation would be somewhat like pgym’s: Thou ancient, thou free, thou highmountained North.

The bit about the high mountains has an inter-nordic reference to one certain country with no mountains.

“Allt under himmelens fäste” is archaic. The translation given by pgym bypasses the double semantic content of himmel (here in the genitive of definitive): sky and heaven.

Allt is kind of a formal filler, but an extended, clumsy, and useless translation would be:

Everywhere and always under the firmament of the heavenly sky

Thank You to everyone who was able to help me out. The settings are very nice, with most of the underlying harmonies and rhythmic interest making these simple tunes very elegant. I'm glad I was asked to prepare these.

The easiest way to do special characters on a PC is Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Character Map

Once you find the character you want, click on it, click "select", then click "copy." Then just paste it into your doc.

So to enter a special character you have to:

a) switch out of the program you're using;
b) go to the Start bar;
c) click Programs;
d) drag to Accessories;
e) drag to System Tools;
f) start up Character Map;
g) search the damn window for the character you want;
h) click on it;
i) click select;
j) click copy;
k) switch back to the program you were using;
l) paste in the copied character.

Twelve steps (ironic, but somehow appropriate, dontcha think?) just to insert one damn character.

On a PC, granted that you know the Alt code, it's only 3 steps:

1) Turn on Number Lock.
2) Do Alt + code using the embedded number pad on the keyboard (on my laptop, M = 0, J = 1, K = 2, L = 3, ...)
3) Turn off Number Lock.

I tend to google a word that I know has the character I'm looking for and copy the letter from the webpage and paste it. It tends to be a bit quicker than searching through the character map.

For instance, if I'm looking for the accent in piu, I google something like "poco piu." The first hit is "Poco più di un anno fa (Adored: Diary of a dorn Star) Movie ..."

There's the "ù" I was looking for, so now I can paste it into my word.

In the past, I tried to memorize some of those codes, but lately I either copy-and-paste them from "Word" or from websites.

You have the ability (most notably in MS Office programs, but others as well) to CHANGE the command for a special character to something that is easy for you to remember. For example, I did/do a significant amount of word processing in Spanish so I set the command for ñ to be ctrl+n. Now I can type mañana, año, y baño as easily as I can type manana, ano, and bano.

I don't know if this technique can be applied to uses such as posting in an online forum (if so, I don't know how), but it sure saves me a lot of time in the rest of my life.

Well, how about that. My Asus EEE has a Num Lock and can do it all, so I figured everything did.

This having to do workarounds for simple typing of extended characters is such a moronic kludge. I will not waste much more time on my Windows PCs as they are just such a nuisance to use. And I am not talking about the nuisance of leaning a new OS, like switching from Windows to a Mac or some flavor of Linux. I am talking about genuinely annoying stuff like such basic word entry. Oh well. I actually preferred MS/DOS to Windows, too. Using Word Perfect 5.0 on an actual IBM PC, though only WYSIWYG via an F Key and not while you were typing (at least not on the combo of stuff I was using) so that only a hint of your formatting could be seen on the black monitor with a few colors to show what was bolded, italicized or underlined, was much easier and more enjoyable for me than any version of Windows after 3.1 or so. (After the nasty lawsuit and the changes to the Windows GUI.)
