Rex Conner

Post by edwssn »

I am looking for former students of Rex Conner. I was fortunate to be one of that lucky crew during the 1970s. Please let me hear from you when you get the chance.

And again, Interlochen 63 & 64. Also met up with him a couple times in later years. A great guy and very good teacher and tubist who was held in high esteem by his colleagues such as Bill, Harvey, and Jake. He was also very involved in the early introduction of MW/Melton into the US in mid 60's.

Never had an actual lesson with him, but growing up playing the tuba in Lexington he was an inevitable presence. I met him several times. I had lessons with a couple of his better students as a Jr. High and early HS player, but at that age it never occurred to me to ask him for a lesson. He retired after my sophomore year of HS, and Skip Gray came, and I worked with him regularly.

I had the honor to study with Rex for five years at UK (1970-75). He was a remarkable man, great teacher, and such a wealth of knowledge. Ed, it's great to know you're on the TubeNet. Dave Abbott is as well.

I miss going to the Coca-Cola house on Traveller Road. BTW, is your big brother still in radio? On, On U of K !!

It is great to hear from a few of you. I presume there are more "Rex" students on this BBS - as you come across them, please encourage them to join in our conversation.

By the way, Is it possible to post sound files on this BBS? I have about 30 recording of Mr. Conner that I've had converted from the reel-to-reel tapes they are on to m4a format. I play them from my iTunes often. In addition, I am capable of converting these files to just about any other file format if m4a is not compatible with the TubeNet setup. Please advise, there's some good stuff.

There are different file hosting sites you can use, and then post links to the files hosted there in a note on here.

Here are links to a few, and there are others:

I studied with him for one summer at Interlochen (1979). I have fond memories of playing with/for him in his little stone hut just beyond the Bowl - as well as having him lead the section in the tuba hut just behind the Bowl. I wonder if either of those little buildings are still standing?
Played an F. E. Olds 4-valve BBb in high school (late '70s)
Led the USC Trojan Marching Band tuba section (early '80s)
Now playing an F. Schmidt (=VMI) 3301 and goofing around
on a 1927 Pan American 64K Sousaphone Grand

I had the pleasure of learning, well at least observing, a few things from Rex at Interlochen in the summer of 1975. One of the highlights of a very humble playing career was that summer when Harvey Phillips came and along with Rex and the tuba section were featured togeather during a concert.

I was lucky enough to have worked (1963-1967) on the staff of Interlochen Summer Canp. Taking lessons each of those summers from him. What a gentleman and wonderful teacher, often playing duets for part of the hour. He taught me a lot of musicianship during those lessons. I was honored to perform a piece in his memory during the summer of 1997 on an alumni recital.

I studied with Rex at UK in 1961/62. His lessons have stayed with me over the years and were very important thru my years as a Navy Musician. A wonderful man and a very good teacher.

I studied with him at Interlochen in 69 and he recommended me for the Academy. He was a great man who was respected by everyone.
