Miraphone 1293 CC

Post by craig2000 »

Just a quick post to say I have just picked up my new Miraphone 1293 CC. For anyone who is interested, this is a truly fantastic instrument. The bottom register is stunning and the pitch is great. Superb Miraphone sound and the response is superb.
Everyone needs to try this CC. Brilliant!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Pictures?! :) How would you say it compares to your MW 2000?

No pictures just now but if people are interested im sure i can organise some horn dorn.
The MW 2000 is still one of the best all round CC tubas I have ever played. The 1293 is much more open, has that Miraphone sound (which I love) and is bigger, more round and a little heavier. The bottom register is big , secure and easy. The MW is tighter in the low end (for me) and starts to become edgy in the louder dynamics earlier than the 1293.
I prefer the sound, bottom register, and weight of sound on the 1293. Its easier to play big, powerful material on the 1293 than the MW.
However the MW is good in the low range and superb from mid to top. Its probably a little more nimble than the 1293.
In short, everything i loved about the MW the 1293 can do equally. But the 1293 has a better bottom register, sound, valves, and maybe even pitch.

I tried out the 1293 at ITEC this past summer, and I fell in love with the horn! If I could sell my Thor and buy one, I would!

Sounds cool! Haha, I remember joking a while back that I'd hold out on the 1292 to get the 1293, not being serious that a 1293 would ever exist. :P

I tried the thor and really didnt get the hype. After all my searching , the one thing I have learned is, is that an instrument is a VERY personal choice. What works for one player can be very different from the next. The miraphone Petruschka and the 1293 seem to me to be the perfect combo. The Bruckner is also a stunning instrument, as is the firebird.
As a British freelancer I have always played Besson and have read with interest on this forum about the big 3 manufacturers. I have never had the pleasure of visiting MW or B&S but my experience with Miraphone and Markus Theinert and his team has been brilliant.
They really seem to have hit the mark with this new range.
Well done Miraphone!!!!!!!!!

Indeed. Matt did not sound bad on this horn. Understatement.

Not available in the states yet, but I'll give it a whirl when they come about. I liked the 1292 that I tried, but perfered the Bruckner over it. I'm looking forward to seeing if the bell width and larger 5th valve make a big difference.

Congrats on your new purchase. Sounds like you got a winner.

It is indeed available in the states. Check with BrassWind, Dillon's, or Ferguson's.

I called up and talked to Roger Lewis a couple of weeks back, and I think he said that he was thinking he would get them in the fall.

Hope you're right. If so, I'll need to make another trip to South Bend. I don't think they are listed on any of the websites for sale as of yet, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

craig2000, Just out of interest where did you buy your Miraphone - in the UK? I know Rosehill can get Miraphone to order, but the last I heard they did not stock CC, or F to try?

It does sound like Miraphone are bring out some good tubas of recent - I would not mind trying a 'Bruckner'

I'm well aware of Mr. Murrow's Miraphone connection, and he would certainly know better than me. Maybe Roger Lewis can chime in to clarify with regards to what the Brasswind is carrying.

I'll call the aforementioned shops to clarify, get prices, etc.

Sadly, these aren't listed on the websites of Brasswind, Dillon, Horn Guys. At least anywhere that I can find. Miraphone does have a photo on it's German language website though. So, they must be out there somewhere.

Congratulations!

However I would be a bit careful with that bare brass Miraphone considering your location.

Ayrshire has been known for high frequencies of red rot:

The German Miraphone site has a slightly different numbering. Is this the one?

I am somewhat curious about Miraphone tuba (like with all tubas), but as long as they issue one or two models each month I cannot discern them. So the photo link was more for somebody to confirm that I found the right one.

To help clarify, I do not know if any of the afore mentioned companies have a 1293 in stock at the present time, but the 1293 is in production and they are not limited to sales in Europe. Markus Theinert and I are at TBA in San Antonio as I write this and just set up the TBA booth with a new silver 1293. We also had this horn at ITEC in May. If you want one check with the companies I mentioned earlier. If they don't currently have one it can be ordered and shipped from Waldkraiburg, Germany. As with any new product the retailers frequently need to see what the demand is going to be like before they order large numbers of any new model. From what I could tell at ITEC this was a horn that everyone was raving about. If you are in San Antonio July 26-27 please come by, say hello, give the 1293 a blow and get your order in! We welcome your comments.

Sincerely,

Thanks to Richard for chiming back in. Could be that the retailers just got theirs and haven't had a chance to put them on their websites yet. No doubt that there is a great deal of buzz on this horn. From what I gather, the bigger 5th valve opens up the already solid low register of the 1292.

Perhaps the bigger bell may help with the resonance too.

Regardless, I'm really looking forward to giving this one a try. Wish I were in SA to give it a spin. No doubt that the folks at ITEC were impressed. Thanks again for the update.

Thanks for making that clear Richard. Like all new instruments it probably takes a little time to get them around all the dealers.
My situation was very different as I was on honeymoon in Europe with my own car. So I organised to test play the whole miraphone range at the factory in Waldkraiburg. The 1293 was my target and I had made it clear that if the hype was correct then I wanted one.
The price and final deal will all be completed by a dealership in due course.
As Richard says, find one somewhere and have a go. It really is worth the effort.
