In my opinion they are not asbestos. Nothing in your description raised ANY alarm bells with me, just sympathy for what is undoubtedly a sh*tty job dealing with them.

I agree that they are most likely asbestos-free. However... wear at least one of those 'monkey masks' when you take them down.
FYI... I also have some of those in one room of my house. They had a few water stains on them from old roof leaks but they took paint very well and still look good.
I guess the best alternative to taking them down is putting up wallboard... also a pain in the a** job!.
