Kubuntu Install without Windows loss...

Post by djwesp »

Any techies have input on how to install kubuntu without having to lose windows? I do not want to format, partition, then reinstall on the partition windows, with kubuntu on the other. I wanna keep what i have right now.

If you do a normal k(Ubuntu) install, the installer detects the Windows partition and makes the machine a dual boot. You can make the Kubuntu partition as small as you'd like. That is the ideal way. Your other option is a wubi install. It's Kubuntu on top of Windows.

If it's a desktop, just throw another hard disk in it and make that the Kubuntu partition, and then set up the dual-boot.

I built a computer, for fun, that can boot XP, Kubuntu, or MS-DOS (don't ask, but I had my reasons), but I set it up that way from the start. In the end, though, I never used Kubuntu--for the applications I needed, the Linux distros and applications are just not there yet. Navigation was one of those applications. Watching movies was another.

What he said. That's what I did on mine. The newest version (10.04) is very nice indeed.

Or use half of it, and reserve the other half for Windows when the other disk fails.
