This is my son's first year at OU and is a member of the band. I thought it was him in front, but it appears he has a twin in the band. Still proud of him anyway.

Cool, Brassdad. For some reason, I got very tired after I watched the video. I believe it was because I was imagining doing all those moves. I like it.

I guess it's happening everywhere...

Ohio State (I suppose long ago...??) ditched their glorious satin-silver Elkhart, Indiana short-action sousaphones and has ended up with smaller lacquer-finish Taiwanese sousaphones.

I'd assume that they did NOT save even one 20K to "dot the i".

(I'd be very proud of my son were he attending Ohio State in ANY capacity...I'm not commenting on your son at all...just forlorn-ing the loss of great high-quality American-made instruments from a legendary institution.)

bloke "The sousaphone section would have a much easier time of it, ergonomically, if they turned their goosenecks and tuning bits around the proper way."

Joe,

I was disappointed when I asked Michael what they used and was told Jupiters. Ohio University has used laquer at least since 1977 when I went there. But my band experience was watching them while drinking in the stands. (ahhhh 3.2 beer!)
His dream was to dot the I at Ohio State, but I think he will have a blast in Athens. Instructors seemed very good.

Oh.... (warning - more bragging to come)

Mike called me and let me know that he made 4th chair tuba in the university orchestra. The 3 players ahead of him are all 5th year seniors.
He couldn't try out for the symphony, as freshmen are not allowed to.
(sounds like self preservation)
I attribute it to his Jr High Teacher (first) and of course to Mark Thiele of the United States Marine Corps Band!

And Chuck is right...OU is dandy, especially around Holloween! PARTY!!!!

Ohio State does, in fact, still use the 20Ks, and Script Ohio is, in fact, still one of the most exciting things in the world.

EDIT: I apologize. This is not an Ohio State thread. I have a friend on the drumline at Ohio University (not Ohio State), and I love the band and the things they do as well.
