Receiver-less leadpipe? Pro/con?

Post by bort »

Last week, I took my tuba up to Alan Baer to get fitted for a PVAK kit (which by the way, is great).

One thing he noticed about my tuba is that the leadpipe does not actually have a receiver -- the "receiver" is actually just a sleeve over the leadpipe itself, and the mouthpiece goes straight into the leadpipe.

I've heard about this before, but have to admit that I don't know much about it. Why are some tubas manufactured like this? Is there a reason for it? Pros/cons about this kind of setup? Thanks! :tuba:

My Rudy is that way, with no receiver.
Have no idea if it's better that way :tuba:

My MW 32 CC is that way and I don't have any pros or cons for it other than the mouthpiece goes really far into my horn.

search old tubenet for "Matt Walters" and "gap".

You will find some discussion of the AGR and Matt mentions the positive and negative aspects of the receiverless setup.
