Here in New York, every year they set up two gigantic spotlights at Ground Zero in observance of 9/11. Never realized before last night that I can see it from our apartment.

When talking to my girlfriend on the way home last night, I jokingly gloated about how I was going to be making her favorite burritos before I ran off to rehearsal. When I got home, the electricity was out. I called her back to tell her I was having celery and sardines.
Learned my lesson.

Just moved into my dorm at the University of Cincinnati. An exciting, nerve-wracking, challenging time.

Just got back from a 1560 mile, 9 day motorcycle trip around Oregon, with slight ventures into Washington and Idaho. Jet boat ride on the Snake River through Hells Canyon, a tram ride up to Mt. Herman in the Wallowa Mountains, and some of the twisty highways that Oregon has to offer.

Had a nice little practice tonight working on the basics. I was so inspired I had to order the Bloke Piece sale's special. Can't wait for the mouthpieces to arrive and begin to mix and match.

Ordered:
#2 Solo
Symphony
#2 rim at 33.2
#1 rim at 33.2
Beginning again to be a tuba player.
1291 King Double B flat with detachable bell.

Very cool. Let us know what you think of them! Oh yeah, how did your horn turn out after Dan Oberloh worked on it?

Bort,

The horn is still in the shop. I won't begin calling him until October. I am looking forward to having it back with improved valves. I am sort of getting used to the Miraphone I am using.

Second update -- had my first band rehearsal of the season tonight. Some real groaners in the folder (some I've played a lot before, some that are modern/out there/do nothing for me) but also my favorite Grainger tune, Children's March. :)

I seem to get less blank stares when I tell people that I'm carrying around a dead body instead of a tuba. :|

Literally a "whopper" -- "Verdi nice!"

I tried my 2 Blokepieces. So far I prefer the Symphony bowl with the number 1 rim = medium wide. I will next switch rims and see what happens. I have better control of the higher notes with the Symphony than I do the Solo. Otherwise they both sound very good, but they do cause a rattle in my bell, because of a loose wreath.

I'm being given a tuba this afternoon, so I need to pick up beer for the person giving it to me...

I am canceling my gym membership so I can participate in my company's new health program called "Sousaphone dent removal." It involves a series of graduated steel balls and shaking. Uggh...

Yesterday, I participated in the 7th annual "mp3 Experiment" in NYC, set up by Improv Everywhere.

We downloaded an mp3 from Improv Everywhere's website, were instructed not to listen to it until the experiment started. We were told to be in a retail store within a 6 block radius at exactly 6:00 PM, and press play. We then spent the next hour following the directions given on the mp3, ending with wrapping each other in toilet paper for a mummy dance party in Bryant Park. (Unlike bloke's comment about the DC rally in another thread, everyone pitched in and cleaned up afterwards, leaving no mess behind).
