Post by GJDavis1 »

Hey all,

I'm giving a recital next April. I'm just looking for various random suggestions and/or advice on the pieces from the folks here at TubeNET. Anything is welcome. Don't be afraid to shoot me a pm if you have anything else you'd like to tell me or discuss at length. Thanks for any advice!! :)

The rep is (in order, but order subject to change):

Meinl Weston 5450 "Thor"
Miraphone "Firebird" (Its the school's)

That is a nice program. Especially the Adagio and Nimrod.

Good luck!

Drink tons of water, not just on the day of the recital, but in the week leading up to it. This will help fight nervous "cotton-mouth".
Also, something you will hear from each of the wisest members here, play your program through several times in a row. As many as you can. You want your recital to be a cake walk, as for performing. So play the snot out of the music, and do it as often as you can leading up to the recital.

Get a good piano player. Both Hindemith and Broughton are exceptionally difficult for them.

Here are some generic recital tips I sent my last Senior who was having a recital:

Make sure the piano lid is fully down or half stick depending on the room.

Check all your slides!

Good posture. Adjust the stand, chair, and tuba to fit YOU.

Point your bell OUT.

Tune to the piano. Your main slide will probably be out 1/2" more than usual. (See threads about matching piano stretch tuning.)

After tuning, listen. Match pitch with the piano, he can't match to you.

Empty water. Between every piece.

Breathe and blow!

Count. Don't try to "feel" any entrances. Everything will feel different the day of the recital.

Don't be afraid to play the loud parts loud. Don't take the soft parts much past one P on accompanied sections, or the piano will bury you.

Sing through the horn. Be musical. Serenade!

Don't let long notes just hang out there. Vibrato, crescendo, do the same as if you were singing it.

If something gets flubbed, keep going - drive on through, "Press towards the mark."

Enjoy yourself. If you play like you are having fun, the whole audience will have fun.

If you scroll down halfway on this thread (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=41020&start=12" target="_blank), there is a fantastic post about prepping for a recital. I'll definitely be keeping it in mind for my recital in March.
(I'm doing the Broughton too!)
