Woodward Tuba Concerto available again

I wanted to let everyone know that James Woodward's Tuba Concerto with Piano accompaniment is available again! It can be purchased from your favorite music dealer or on the Cimarron Music Press website. It has been revised by James and we will be posting some .pdf and sound samples shortly.

Both recordings are great and it is a real treat to be able to hear the Concerto with both the Piano and Concert Band versions side by side...

I'm glad to hear this is available again Bryan, but, just out of curiosity, what sort of changes have been made? Are they major, or is the piece essentially the same as before. Let me know!

I can double check with James on specifics, but from my end it has been completely re-engraved with better page turns, more legible, etc.

I do know James made the piano part more approachable for the accompanists...more tomorrow...

Thanks for asking about the updates!

The overall score looks dramatically better. The old version was from Finale 98, so simply saying that the new version was produced using Finale 2011 should say quite a bit about the overall look of this updated version!

As for notes and rhythms, very little (if anything) has changed. If you played the solo using the old version with an accompanist using the new version, everything would work out just fine.

For the solo and piano reduction, what has most changed is the quality of dynamics and articulations. The new version is much more specific about articulations and clearer with dynamics. For example, the old version has quite a few crescendo and decrescendo markings that don’t give starting or ending dynamic markings. Dynamics are now clear at the beginning and ending of every crescendo and decrescendo.

The piano reduction has been altered to feel like an actual piano reduction instead of a short score for a large ensemble. I’m sure your accompanists will have an easier time playing from this version than the Finale 98 version.

Time signatures and meters are better defined. For example, in the third movement, we’ve changed the large meters into smaller ones to help keep everything together, such as dividing the 8/4 measure into two measures of 4/4.

Thanks James and Bryan for the update to this. I'm really glad we have people like this in our industry. Also, please check out other works by James, including Three Reflections, a piece that I am a huge fan of. It really is a moving tribute to someone very special to me.
