Church Brass group music
We have a church brass group that is just getting going. The instrumentation is trumpets, trombone, baritone and tuba. Anyone have suggestions where I can find music? By the way, the church has big ceilings and is just made for tuba. It gives that nice full rich sound we all love.

Based on my experience, you're going to get a lot of helpful replies about this, both on the board and by PM.
One thing you can do right away, though, is go to groups.yahoo.com and ask Klaus to let you into his "yorkmasterbbb" groups, where he has a lot of pieces you can use with whatever instrumentation you have.

If either your trombone or baritone/euph player has the chops, have him/her play the French Horn part. If the euph (as opposed to British style baritone) covers the part, he/she will need to dial back the dynamic level 1-2 degrees in the upper register (so FF = F or MF, MF = MP or P, etc.) because the sound is so broad and expansive it can easily bury anything else in the same register.

Salvation Army brass arrangements are good for this. They come in a variety of Treble and Bass clef, and are frequently labeled at parts 1,2,3,4,5,6 for several instruments so you can distribute as you need. We had 2 trumpets, trombone, euph and tuba and found some that sounded great. The stuff I had also had woodwind parts if you wanted to include them.

I haven’t had this permutation in mind specifically, when doing my edition. Oddly enough, because this was the composition of one of the more impressive brass quintets I remember seeing on TV many years ago: The Brass Band. I don’t remember whether they came from LA or from SF.talleyrand wrote:Based on my experience, you're going to get a lot of helpful replies about this, both on the board and by PM.

Especially if the trombone is of the King 3B, or even of the Bach 36, magnitude, I would rather recommend letting the trombone play the part just below the trumpets.

You might try the American Instrumental Ensemble Series from the Salvation Army. You could call Joe Johnson, the music store admin guy, at (404) 728-1383. These are graded sacred quintets for various mixtures of instruments. Grade I is really Jr. High stuff and grade IV is playable by very good HS muscians. These are arranged by some fine arrangers, the Curnow brothers, Steve Bulla, Doug Court and more of that ilk. I have used these successfully with standard quintet instrumentation, or all mixed up, Part I treble clef Bb, Part 2 treble clef Bb and F, Part 3 treble clef F and Bb bass clef C, Part 4 treble clef Bb and bass clef C, Part 5 is optional but it really needed, treble clef Bb and bass clef C. Google the title for add'l info or just call Joe for a catalogue.
I found a catlogue online.

I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.
