I plan to enter my schools Conerto/Aria competition and the winner gets to play with the school's orchestra, however the orchestra is very small, therefore any piece has to have (easily attainable) accompaniment parts for small orchestra.
So I was wondering if you all knew of any material that meets these requirements?

If you are allowed to do a piece originally written for another instrument (cello, horn, bassoon, etc) then there are quite the options.

Jan Koetsier - Concertino
Gordon Jacob - Tuba Suite (may be for string octet)
Arild Plau - Concerto
These come to mind immediately.
In my opinion, don't do a transcription. Be an ambassador for our instrument.

The Frackenpohl "Concertino" is a nice work and only requires strings.

Can anyone recommend a good recording of the Frackenpohl?

Re: Solo for Tuba and Small Orchestra
As I recall, there has been some discussion on this forum about a recording of this work. So you should do a quick search to confirm. Apparently, for such a popular piece, there are no commercial recordings that are readily available. Although you may be able to contact folks about recordings that are not commercially available. You should also try YouTube.....maybe you will get lucky.Art Hovey wrote:Can anyone recommend a good recording of the Frackenpohl?

Please consider the Barbara York Concerto for Tuba and Orchestra. The second movement, alone, makes a fine solo, lasting about 6 minutes. The entire piece is also quite pliable and the orchestra parts are playable by a high school orchestra of modest size. You can get it from BVD Press, a TubeNet sponsor.
Always make a good sound; audiences will forget if you miss a note but making a good sound will get you the next job.

Being an ambassador for our instrument, and being an ambassador for it's literature are two very different things!LARSONTUBA wrote:In my opinion, don't do a transcription. Be an ambassador for our instrument. Andy Tuba
I think that choosing music that is accessible to the audience makes acceptance of the instrument by the public, a possibility.
