The internal point in the mouthpiece where the cup meets the shank. The backbore is generally tapered inwards slightly compared to the rest of the shank.
Some people feel enlarging this backbore with a drill will empower them with a huge sound and cure their neglected low range.
The backbore is the inside of the shank. It is the tapered tunnel from the throat (the narrowest part) to where the shank opens into the instrument. The taper of it affects its characteristics to some extent, and that's why people discuss it.
