The last thing I want to do is turn this neat update thread of over 300 pages into a poloitical forum that might get locked so I will decline any further posts on this topic. I have been quite amused by some of the responses though.

I hope this will be innocent enough. -- I hope to soon pick up my King tuba at the Billings Greyhound depot after having received a valve job from Dan Oberloh of Oberloh Woodwind and Brass Works of Seattle. I can't wait to try it out. Tuba Christmas in Sheridan is not that far away - time wise and distance wise.

The King is working just fine and is in the house. However the sound is a different sound that the one I became accustomed to with the Miraphone I played while the King was getting the valve job. If I ever get to the point where I want to upgrade and get a new tuba, it will be a decision between a new King 2341W or a Miraphone 1291. But since I now have my King, I need to spend some quality time with it.

I moved from pup-tent-sized 60w 30l Levi's that were pretty tight to very loose 54w 30l over the past four months. In fact, I ditched my 56s today for the 54s.

That's VEEEEERY interesting. Coulda sworn he wrote it for piano - not orchestra - thus the size of a tuba would not have mattered in the least.

Well, most folks don't know this, but Mussorgsky was actually an avid jazz sousaphone player and one of his "things" was always having a 5/4 BBb sousaphone wherever he went (he never owned a horn, always borrowed from the venue). The truth is that he made a deal with Joseph Ravel where Mussorgsky would write Pictures for Joseph's yet-unborn son Maurice to orchestrate in exchange for Joe to make Modest a yo-yo that never stopped spinning. That was when the "Diesel engine" was invented (Diesel got his name on it through a patent loophole, I always call it what it really is: the Ravel engine).

Saw a real, honest to goodness, Coyote in my back yard this morning 'bout daylight. I'll be really careful walking my little dog for a while. Unusual. There are probably 10,000 people living within the square mile I live in, and here's this Coyote. I would shoot it, but I'm not allowed to use firearms in my neighborhood. Poor cats.

Well, yeah. I guess that's my update for the day: Max, the neighborhood ramblin' cat, is gone. He had been stopping by once or twice a day, nearly every day, since back in summertime when we'd leave the doors open for ventilation. He was kind of a serious guy, didn't play-fight or anything, and pretty gentle - if you picked him up and carried him somewhere he didn't want to go, despite his struggles you wouldn't know he had claws, because he didn't ever claw or bite. He'd sure jump, though, loved to jump up on stuff, including on the table, which was forbidden. He hated that, you could practically hear him thinking "man, there is NO reason why I shouldn't be allowed there!" and then he would get irritated and leave. But he'd be back, because above all else he liked his back scratched. He'd lay in ecstasy in your lap and purr and look up at you like "you're so wonderful!" When he'd hear me sit down upstairs, he'd come up the stairs so fast he'd lose traction and bang his knees on the steps, and sprint across the room, and then at the top of his jump he'd be kind of floating over my lap, legs together and nearly straight.

Max wasn't our cat, he lived down the next block. His owner took care of him - he wasn't neglected - but there isn't much you can do, to help a cat that roams around the neighborhood like that survive to a ripe old age. I don't know what happened to him. We have more dogs, and raccoons, than coyotes, and of course more cars. But in any case it has been a week since we saw him last, and I guess I never shall see him again. Bye, Max!

that's pretty lame. our animal control is really good responding, though it's part of the Sheriff's dept here.

Update: It is mid November and it was warm, sunny and 65 degrees here in the "frozen tundra" that is North Dakota. No snow here . . . yet, but we all know it it coming. According to the almighty Farmer's Almanac, it is coming with a vengance
