Performance & Pedagogy

Post by thattubachick »

Hey,
I'm graduating this year from a really really small Canadian university with a B. Mus in tuba. I've been looking into applying for grad schools in the States since in Canada there is only really a handful of places to go. It's really hard to sift through so many schools down south though, so I was wondering if anyone could give me a few ideas of mid-level schools in the states that offer performance & pedagogy programs. Top schools like Indianna are a little out of my league, but I do want to go somewhere where I'll eventually be awesome (and be able to play in a kick-*** orchestra). Does it exist?

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any input!
Michela

Indeed it does. The University of Georgia+Dave Zerkel=Perfection.

Bowling Green State University. Dave Saltzman is a great teacher and amazing player. He will be looking for grad students, so give it a look.

I went to BGSU myself years ago. There were generous in the assistantships, rigorous in the course load. If things haven't changed much, you need to like the library.

I got my MA from The University of Iowa with John Manning, tuba and founding member of the Atlantic Brass Quintet. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with him! The MA program is a degree in performance and pedagogy. The pedagogy section of the degree consists of three courses: trumpet/horn pedagogy, tuba/euphonium/trombone pedagogy, and advanced brass ensemble literature. They are terrific classes and aim to expose you to the literature and playing problems often associated with those instruments. I highly recommend the program! If you have questions, email Professor Manning. :-D
