If anyone is around Athens, I will be presenting a "listener friendly" tuba recital at the University of Georgia on Wednesday, January 19 at 8PM in Ramsey Hall. The program will be repeated at JanFest on Friday, January 21 at 8 in the morning. (yikes!)
The program looks like this:
Barat- Introduction and Dance
Wilhelm- Concertino
Corwell- Aboriginal Voices
Three Ballads:Ihlenfeld- Clouds, Crockett- Mystique, Sondheim- Send in the Clowns
Pilafian- Tuba Blues (an unaccompanied set of variations on a blues riff)
Catozzi- Beelzebub
Sam's piece has not yet arrived, but sounds like it will be very cool and an attractive vehicle down the road for us dinosaurs who still love our big tubas.
Also, on the evening of the 21st, I'll play the first movement of the Horovitz Concerto with the UGA Wind Ensemble. They will be premiering a new multi-movement work by Eric Ewazen on the same program. Should be a cool concert.
Sorry for the crass commercial announcement!

Your second performance was this morning, while I was at the National Cathedral playing a brass quintet prelude to the Inauguration Prayer Service. You worked harder than I did this morning, but I took the prize for yesterday. What's the scoop on the new Ewazen piece? Published? Fun? Anybody boo at the end? I'm interested...
Wish I could have been there to hear the show. You know I mean it-- I REALLY wish I'd been THERE...

No booing. It's really a nice piece, but like all of his tunes, 37% too long. The band played two movements of a four movement suite tonight... 20 minutes later, they played the next piece. They will do all four movements in Savannah next week at GMEA...I'll give you the full report!

I've got his concerto on my stand right now, and I'm diggin' it, so I wouldn't mind taking a swing at his new piece, too. I hope there's a piano reduction for the accompaniment. His concerto is published through Southern Music, I'm assuming the new chart will go through there as well.David Zerkel wrote:They will do all four movements in Savannah next week at GMEA...I'll give you the full report!
