Please advise - A deal that's to good to miss

Post by Jonathan Fowler »

The parent of a HS student sent me this link. I see lots of grammatical mistakes in the description. I know that doesn't make it fraudulent, but it did get me suspicious.

Any advice?

There is nothing suspicious about this listing. Bad grammar doesn't make a listing fraudulent. There are many sellers who do not proof read their listings.

Could one of you rather knowledgeable folks comment as to whether this is a good deal, what reputation this particular model of Mirafone has, and any idea of it's characteristic sonority? Would it be capable of thunderous bass in a large symphony, or more at home in smaller groups? The bell clearly shows MiraFone (not MiraPHone) JE186B, ser#9008356, and the seller says it's a CC. Would you classify it as a 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 or a BAT? Is it similar to the 5v version of this .772 bore, 17.7" bell, hugely discounted right now at WWBW for $6449? http://www.wwbw.com/Miraphone-186-Serie ... 16401.wwbw" target="_blank
Thanks in advance for any info...

MiraPHone and MiraFone are the same. When these horns were first distributed in the US, there was a company called Miraphone, so the spelling was changed to Mirafone for the US market horns (If I am wrong about this it is the other way around.)

The 186 is the classic 4/4 German rotary tuba. It will do everything you ever want it to do. Seems like a decent deal because it's in such great shape, and comes with a bunch of extras. You could get one in not-as-good condition, that plays as good or better, for less cash.

Looks OK to me. But... if you have suspicions or questions... contact the seller.
