I remember in TMEA during my high school years, alternates were used a lot, because people simply wouldn't show up. I would pretty much bet on you playing at the concert. Our director made the alternates go anyways just in case, and in most cases they were used. One year there were 5 tuba alternates, and all 5 were used..and there still wasnt enough tuba players. I guess people failed and couldnt go to the concert.

Yes we had rules where if you failed a class with below a 70, you would be ineligible from all UIL activities

Most states's high school activities assoc. have an elegibility rule that applies to all extra-curricular activites. Typically, the school administrator runs grades at the beginning of the week and if you are failing a class (or more than one  ) you cannot participate for the next 7 days in whatever activity. Sadly, this usually comes up to bite me in the a** about contest time and I lose somebody out of the band/choir that hurts what we're trying to do, i.e. the only horn player in the band.
