Dude, what is this tuba?

Hi Folks,


I am presently in possession of a 1932 Holton BF BBb tuba. 4 valves up, seems to be a small bore to start with, tightly wrapped and with a pretty friggin' large bell. What do I call this thing.

I don't know how to work my camera, so I have no pics, but may have some tomorrow.

It's not big like a 24J or anything. It's smallish and it growls down low.

The tuba looks kind of small in the first picture, but keep in mind that I am extremely large!

I cannot see the photo at the moment, but believe you are describing one of the very "York-ish" tubas that Holton assembled and sold. I just finished a play-condition refurbishing of a similar old Holton last week, and it looks and plays like the 4/4 York model 33.

Most of these tubas that I've seen had 3-top-pistons, some with 4-top-pistons, all with a .656" bore. Most were equipped with a 20" upright bell, but front recording bells were also available.
