Mouthpiece for Alex F

Post by j1007hc »

To all the Alex F-ers out there,

What mouthpiece do you use? I recently acquired an Alex F tuba with no mouthpiece.

Much appreciated!

Right now I like a PT-64 on mine, but any small cup shaped mouthpieces seems to work well. The Bobo Solo was a pretty good fit as was an old PT-9 that I had for a while. My horn is a bit smaller than a lot of the Alexander F's that I see, so YMMV.

I currently use a Dillon F1. I find that it doesn't limit the sound of the instrument and really helps to zing the high range.

I remember trying MANY mouthpieces when I first got the horn about 7 years ago. I feel your pain.

Good luck.

I've kept a PT-9 all these years just for use on my Alex F. The Laskey 28 C is a close modern design, and works very well. The old PT-9 has a very wide and rounded rim while the Laskey comes with a standard rim (thinner rim, more defined inner edge).

I really like my F tuba to ring, and these mps produce that. Intonation is very good, and the smaller volume cup seems to help articulation speed and clarity.

+1 on the old PT 9. Fit's my 80's vintage Alex without any need for an adapter.

Just to clarify, isn't the old PT-9 the modern PT-64?

Not sure. I had heard there were differences: slight or large, I just don't know. It's been so long since I compared...

I think there were enough differences that I passed on the 64...

What are you using on the CC? You should TRY something by the same maker, just a little shallower and slightly smaller diameter rim. This is a good place to start.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Tony, I use a Laskey 30H Euro on my big CC. I ordered a 28C Euro this morning.

My horn has a Euro shank receiver. Is this the case for some of yours as well (I'm not sure whether this was the original receiver or not)?
