Here's a shot of me sitting in with the Water Street Hot Shots. We were joined that evening by the great Nashville multi-instrumentalist Eric Lewis on mandolin. Having fun with old-timey music! Hotcha!

I am playing my King 1241 with Lee Stofer mods (vented valves, extra water keys). I love this horn. Got an upright bell for it as well.

B.A.R.T. is a Kaiser bore WWI era German tuba currently in CC. The maker L. Mitsching and the location lberfeld (currently a subdivision of Wuppertal, Germany) is engraved on the bell.
19.5" upright bell, 40" tall, 4 rotor valves of .827" bore, and clockwork springs complement this beast of an instrument. It is surprisingly lightweight for its size due to being entirely handmade of sheet brass; the triangle seams are clearly visible on the inside of the bell.

(Overhead spot lighting in that picture really threw off the colors on about the top third of it; the tuba was not affected.)

I have a Mitsching myself, albeit a much more modest one, an Eb alto flugelhorn.

Hence a tiny correction. The town of origin is Elberfeld, which actually is part of Wuppertal since 1929. And then there appears to be an Elberfeld in Indiana also.

Thank You Marty and Klaus, for the history and the extra pictures of this beautiful instrument... I typed in B.A.R.T. in the search and it told me that I couldn't use just single letters so I put Big.A no go just a few players came up<S>I like the looks of your horn Marty but because of the large bore is it harder to play??I would think that you would have to move more air around to play it?..(C.O.P.D.you know<s>) Having never played a big bore horn( although I'de like to try<s>)I like the unlacqured look... since this is the first of it's kind that I have seen.. would you say it's a rare bird?? or is there a place I could go that would have simuler tubas to look at? Boy sure wish santa would bring me one of those for Christmas<s>Take care..........................................BB

My friend and I took some pictures for my grad recital and I thought I'd share a few of them. We lucked out and found a few rain-less hours in this soggy Bay Area weather we've been having lately! Horn is a MW 2145.


I was happy that she was able to avoid showing the dent put in the bottom bow by Air Canada in both these pictures.

Note: the horn played a bit sharp, requiring a long pull of the main tuning slide. This allowed me to buy a "tuning bit" from Sam Gnagey, which greatly improves the angle of the mouthpiece, and lets me push the tuning slide most of the way back in. An earlier owner added a lever extension for the dependent 5th valve, so that it can be actuated with the right hand thumb. Lee Stofer fabricated an extension for the factory half step 5th valve tubing, allowing it to be played in the factory set-up or with a flat whole step configuration, which I prefer. A great quintet horn, and also works well with civic theater orchestras or small church orchestras as well. Sorry for the small size pic -- just imagine a YEB-321 with a 5th rotary valve inserted into the 4th valve tubing loop ....

I checked the map -- Elberfield, Indiana is in the far southwest corner of the state, near the city of Evansville -- very close to TubaTinker's place, and very far from most other places in the state! (which is why I had never heard of it....)

Played a few horns over the years, but my favorite was always the instrument I was holding indoors out of the cold and rain. After NY, Berlin (and anything close to Germany), Washington, Virginia (a few times), Atlanta and a couple trips to the middle east, my hat is off to those who choose the military. Nice to be retired and looking forward to many more years of playing.

Here's a couple of pictures of guys and their horns of the day from the past few years. Hopefully, I can score a few more with the scanner. Included are Gino, Brian, Aaron and Don Cordero. Best of luck to them all and stay safe.
