Charlie Vernon XMAS (MONDAY DEC 20)

Post by bigwillystyle »

If you are in the Chicago area, come see Charlie Vernon and his Christmas trombone ensemble. Featuring operatic bass Sam Ramey.

Monday, Dec 20 - 7:30pm
Trinity United Methodist Church
1024 Lake Ave
Wilmette, IL

-Venue is less than a half mile walk from the Wilmette Metra station.
-If I had to make a guess, I'd say there's no admission fee, but then you know what they say about assumptions...

Sorry for the last second info. I only got the specifics a few hours ago and I'm playing on this dang thing.

So, again I'm sorry for the short notice. It was a nice concert. Lots of sing-alongs. Sam Ramey wowed the crowd singing "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" with a fun trombone accompaniment (arr. Tom Matta). Charlie rocked the alto trombone, and CSO's John Hagstrom played a mean soprano trombone (slide trumpet) which had a surprisingly sweet tone. Also we had one of the best contrabass bone players I know, Dave Becker, plus a whole contingent of DePaul University trombone players. Full chorus and organ, too. And the whole thing put together in a single 2-hour rehearsal. On top of that, there were 2 inches of snow waiting outside for us at the conclusion. That's the summary. If you didn't make it, don't feel bad. It was a packed house.

I played tuba, you know, to keep things sane.

"Where will there be a video posted?" he asked assumptively.

I'm pretty sure there was no video recording, but knowing the trombonists of the area, I wouldn't be surprised if some audio shows up eventually.
