Must be tough times down in TX, when they have to feed their donkeys the bodies of their basses.

Doc -- welcome back from your apparent hiatus. I've been away as well, and when finally finding time to take a peek around TubeNetVille, I didn't notice any recent posts from you. Glad to see the Doc is In again.Doc wrote:Here's a pic that's 4-5 years old. Don't have anything recent with tuba.

Welcome back, Doc & Steve. I haven't been on TubeNet much lately, myself. However, your absence has been duly noted. I hope we hear more from you in 2011.

Re: Me & My Tuba, Add You & Yours
Sincere congratulations! I remember feeling such excitement when I went from my first tuba, a Conn 25J (which, ironically after all these years, has become a somewhat coveted horn) to my Nirschl CC. Such positive emotions you must be feeling today: pride, excitement, anticipation of how much more accurately the horn can reflect the work that you put into it, etc.musician13 wrote:This is my Miraphone 1291 fresh out of the case. Is your 1291 a CC or BBb? New or used? Neither question has much significance. You've got a great horn now, and you're ready to conquer the tuba world. What a great way to start 2011!
Best of luck,
Steve

Re: Me & My Tuba, Add You & Yours
It's a BBb. I decided that though most professionals use CC tubas, since I'm not quite proficient on those yet the instrument I chose aught to be one I can play well.Is your 1291 a CC or BBb?
Had just arrived from the factory when I ordered it from the Horn Guys down in CaliforniaNew or used

Thanks for the congrats guys, that picture is actually a couple of months old, but it still is a great way to end the year

Re: Me & My Tuba, Add You & Yours
My "new" Miraphone 186 CC I bought in the fall of 2009 with my then-14 month old daughter! According to the serial number the tuba was manufactured in 1977. Someday I want to add a 5th valve to it. In the second picture you can see that I've since stripped off some of the lacquer (I would like to get it down to the brass), added a leather wrap around the top bow where it was wearing thin, put leather pieces on the paddles just because I like the soft feel, wrapped some leather around the 1st valve slide because it was also wearing thin (and tied the end to a brace so it wouldn't keep falling out when I set it down), rubber rings on the first valve slide, and added a leather wrap around the bell where my hand rests. I also included a picture of my Conn 12J I bought to have as a "beater" horn. Actually, I've used it quite a bit with friends that don't own a tuba coming over and playing duets, it's been a lot of fun.

Re: Me & My Tuba, Add You & Yours
According to the seller, this tuba was kept in a storage room at a HS for a number years because the bell was severely damaged. In the late 80s, the bell was repaired and the tuba was completely restored--the seller used it in HS, college, and for the local band and orchestra where he lives.LJV wrote:Great looking 20J. Nice tuba, TUBAD83! Really nice! And, bort, I'm pretty sure when you're 58, you won't be a a 3 banger.bort wrote:I hope I look that good when I'm a 58 year old 3 banger...TUBAD83 wrote:My new 20J...not bad for a 58 year old 3 banger!Haha.
