Tuba tour Europe 2011

Post by tubaknut »

My friend and I are starting to make up an outline for our long awaited tuba tour of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. :D

To be sure that we'll not miss any places worth visiting, I thought it would be a good idea to make a post here, to give you all the possibility to influence our trip. Either after the trip, or while underway, we'll make a diary here, with pictures and comments.

We start off from Norway, some time this summer, going by ferry to Denmark, before driving down to Germany.

Our itinerary looks like this so far:

http://bit.ly/hPsj5o" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank" target="_blank (link to Google maps)
Google maps couldn't get directions from Norway and back, so I had to settle with Denmark on the map. But we'll be traveling from Norway.

Porsgrunn, Norway
---
Hirshals, Denmark
---
B - Hamburg, Germany
Having some food and a look around
---
C - Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Same as Hamburg
---
D - Diespeck, Germany
Rudolf Meinl
---
E - Sumiswald, Switzerland
Hirsbrunner
---
F - Flums, Switzerland
Wilson
---
G - Geretsried
Melton/Meinl Weston
W. Nirschl
---
H - Vienna, Austria
Having a look at the culture, and hopefully attending some concerts
---
I - Linz, Austria
Same as Vienna, and a trip to the Brucknerhaus. I played a concert here in 2010, and will definitely come back.
---
J - Markneukirchen, Germany
B&S
Werner Schmidt (mouthpiece specialist)
---
K - Berlin, Germany
Attending a concert with Berliner Philharmoniker.

There surely must be other places and factories worth visiting as well. Please feel free to discuss and share your wishes! :)

If you are going to Hamburg you may want to visit Gronitz? I would also suggest Alexander in Mainz, not far off your route at Frankfurt, then travel up/down the scenic Rhine valley.

Werner Schmidt is actually at Markneuenkirchen very near B&S. However the B&S factory is not set up for visitors, so question if you will get a tour. Also in the town is a nice music instrument museum worth spending an hour.

Nirschl is also located in Geretsried.

Bremen doesn't seem too far out of the way for your tour, you could stop by Thein there.

I really envy you, that tour is going to be great fun, and something I always wished to make (from the other side of Europe upward though! ) and never been able too..
I see you are going as far south as to Switzerland, so I suggest to make a little longer turn and come to Italy, to visit G&P in Legnano, it's a half hour drive from the Swiss border and it might be worth. At least you can have a good pizza and espresso!
This is G&P address:

G&P Wind Instruments

Via Novara, 68/C - 20025
Legnano (MI) - ITALY
TEL./FAX: + 39 0331 459296

mail: info@gp-wind.com" target="_blank
Have a good trip!

Gronitz and Alexander should absolutely be included in our tour.
Schmidt got misplaced. Nirschl was supposed to be in Geretsried.

When I had a look at the B&S website yesterday, I saw that they only accomodate larger groups, when requested in advance. My local repairsman got his education at the B&S factory, so he'll might be able to arrange something for us. If not, we'll at least meet Schmidt in Markneukirchen.

If Thein has tubas in their workshop, we'll might give Bremen a visit too.

Since you are specifically stopping in Hamburg, go and see Gronitz.

I would also advise you to go to some retailers of used tubas. There seem to be a wide selection available in Germany, specifically rotary horns and helicons.

Hi
if you just want to see and test-play lots of tubas, then stop at FMB in Gütersloh, http://www.fmb-direkt.de/" target="_blank
That would be not so far on your trip from Hamburg to Frankfurt.

I'd find a way to spend a day in Baden-Baden - your route goes very nearby.

Hello,
There is another big retailer of music instruments, called Thomann.
I believe they are situated in Bayern.
They have at least 100 tubas in stock, of all kinds.
Check out their tuba homesite http://www.thomann.de/gb/tubas.html
I do wish I could join you.
Have a good trip,
Lars

If you're going to be in Hamburg, I've been told Eutin is only about an hour away and they have a summer opera festival. I'll be there for 6 weeks, if you come down I'll buy you a beer!

I'll be in Lübeck and Baden Baden the week after Labor Day weekend - anything worth a day trip from either one?

I don't know off the top of my head, but I do know Eutin is a half hour away from Lübeck. I should be able to report after I go there (leaving on Friday).
