One horn or two?

I have to decide whether to take only my large bass trombone or both it and a smaller horn to a gig. The concern is an Elgar piece that has to have the big boy and the Magic Flute, which I would prefer to play on a smaller horn. I know you guys are faced with this question all the time, so give me your thoughts.

Aren't two trombones just about as easy to lug to a gig as one tuba ?

Amen brotha--That will cause you a world of grief ESPECIALLY if the conductor is a fiddle or piano player (who think they are way superior to you anyway...don't make it worse!)

As for schelping difficulty, two trombones would be roughly equal to one tuba and exactly double one tromobone. I also just found out that we are only doing the last movement of the Elgar which is all in the staff except for one Db. I may try it all on the little horn. I also just learned that we added the Sarasate Carmen Fantasy, so I get to play the first 8 bars, count 99 measures, play 1 note, count 489 measures only to play the last 8 notes of the piece. Oh joy! If only I were getting paid, this might be a pay per note record. Maybe that's another post though.

Man up and play it on your big horn! If I can scream out tenor licks for years on my dual bore bass you should do the same. Seriously, why do you even have a horn smaller than a bass?!?!

I play the Besson 95% of the time, but I use a '68 single trigger Olds O-25 for tenor stuff and an Olds recording if I need a jazz horn. The O-25 at .555 is a decent little bass horn for early stuff. The last time I used it for a 3rd part was the Mozart Requiem. Crazy, but my range is about the same no matter which horn/mp combo I'm using, just get a different sound.

Neat clip. Do you ever get, "What's all that extra stuff on your horn?" in that context?

I'm with Bob on this one. I do most of my tbone playing on my bass primarily because it is the one I practice on so its the one I'm used to using (that, and being the tuba player that I am I function better with the 2 valves versus 6th & 7th position

). I played a couple of concerts with the local community band last year and was asked to play the 1st part. I took the small bore the first couple of rehearsals, but then took the bass one night as I had something else going on that neccesitated it that trip for some reason. I actually had an easier time with the higher notes with the large bore and largerer mp so I kept using it for the 2 concerts. Got some strange looks from the old men in the section that had never seen one with the double, but when I laid my parts down, they just shook their heads and went with it

King 5B (or similar) with a 1G and a 6 1/2 AL. I don't play 'bone but I think that's the way my son would handle the situation.
